A person should not strive to be any of those things. If any of those terms describe a person's ideas, tastes, or beliefs, then so be it. Maybe next week different words will decribe them. Folks who get too caught up in being ______ lose sight of the fact they are just words and labels. People who really care about being goth are turning themselves into the same type of fashion slave that they make fun of. If they have to dress or act a certain way in order to be cool, they're just as much a follower as any cheerleader or jock that they might make fun of.
Being an individual isn't about being goth, or punk, or preppy, or anything like that. It's about being yourself regardless of how cool (or uncool) that might be. It's about liking what and who you like without making apologies for it.

That and punk seem to be so misaligned with what they represent vs. what they used to be vs. what they mean now.
A girl in Siouxsie Sioux makeup or a guy with eyeliner and a crucifix earring could be enough for goth acceptance 20 - 25 years ago.
Most fringe groups begin with the outcasts of other groups creating their own to find acceptance.
Eventually, they end up becoming dominated by the same types of people who cast out the originators.
While there are many who will grow older and still maintain this as 'who they are', most will move on to the next trend or adapt to a conservative 'grown-up' lifestyle.
sorry if I was rambling. it seemed more coherent in my head.
If you were to follow up on that, I would suggest being more constructive or just leaving it as 'to each his own'.
