Just make sure you are doing this for others and not your own peace of mind. So many ppl come back and talk about what a good experience it was and how it opened their eyes, blah, blah, blah..., but did it actually do any good for the poor and suffering? Anyhow, sounds like a good idea though.

Well that's the thing that stumped me when initially filling out the application for Hope International. They asked why I was doing this, and I suddenly felt selfish ( ... )

The funny thing about Japan is that it is a rich country so in some ways we take somethings for granted. But in other ways we don't. Japan modernized in a short period of time and has few resources. I found it interesting that many homes have hoses that feed bath water into the washing machine. And since Japan is supposed to be the forerunner of the Kyoto Accord, our garbage system is incomprehensible. Everything is sorted. Anyhow, enough about that. I understand what you are getting at. Of course you have to do a bit of sight-seeing. You have to take in the culture and get an understanding of the people that you are helping. I've been thinking that I want to help out the local orphanage, but I'm waiting until I can make a commitment. I don't want to abandon a bunch of orphans! Horribleness. hehe. Well even if you do just get a good experience it can be something you can pass on to others. Get others involved. Anyhow, keep us updated.
