A.S. Byatt has the gift of shock.

Her novella Morpho Eugenia surprised me like whoa. It wasn't the "fuck me up for a few days" blow of Still Life, but it certainly caught me unawares.

I grow fonder and fonder of Byatt with every work I read, though it can be an emotional as well as intellectual workout.

Denver Nuggets vs. Phoenix Suns at the Carrier Dome in October! I got tickets as soon as they went on sale. I get to see Steve Nash! SQUEAL!

I am about three-fifths of the way through Sara Douglass's latest paperback, The Serpent Bride, the first in the DarkGlass Mountain series. Her style has changed in subtle ways that I do not like overmuch. But I still find myself utterly addicted: I'm devouring this book.
