Why do new car stereos come with remotes? Do people really need to remotely control something that is 6 inches in front of their face?

i like the cars that have some of the stereo buttons on the steering wheel. when one is as poor of a driver as i am, every additional second that both of my hands are on the wheel makes the roads a much safer place. unfortunately, the only car that I ever drive that has such a feature is my mom's Pilot in Florida...so 3/4 of the time when I'm in my car in NC, all the other drivers are at the risk of my frequent music changing.
ps- how did you know that new cars come with remotes?

not the cars themselves, the stereo systems. all the ones you can buy for your car come with remotes. i dunno what youre supposed to do with it, put it in your middle console until you want to change music? i think it would be faster to just press the actual faceplate to change anything.
