yeah instead of engaging with an ideology with legitimate criticism, instead they demonize it by attaching "radical" to "socialist" when...it's like, hm, compared to what.

and I mean, I agree it's not necessarily productive to tell anyone to shut up (granted this was written at 3 am after a particularly apocolyptic flood of facebook statuses), but when you get to a particular paranoid place, anyone who tells you anything that contradicts you is just part of the conspiracy. and then I'm called "just an indoctrinated liberal" which just derails all conversation. -_- lol like your friend august who apparently thinks obama is part of a new world order...

depends on your comparison, doesn't it? on a global scale, I'd say he is. for the united states, hm, he's obviously liberal but I've never heard any reasoning behind the slogan "he's the most liberal person in the congress." I mean, in ideology there are definitely some very far left senators (like, for real hardcore socialists) but I have a feeling the "most liberal" distinction is based on some vote ratio and...well, the whole left/right continuum is problematic, I don't know how they decide which is what issue (do pro-environment votes count as liberal etc).
