I have just finished watching an episode of Knightrider on DVD, as I had rather fond memories of it from my childhood. I was hoping that it would have aged well (unlike it's leading actor) and Micheal Knights cheesy acting and vomitville clothes wouldn't be too offensive ( Read more... )

I often experience this, sometimes from DVDs of childhood series and sometimes from books. 'Monkey' and 'The Water Margin', for example, do not bear adult examination well.

I used to love both of those so much! Monkey was repeated last year at some stupid time of the morning on a week night so I could never watch it...

Let's be honest, you didn't really miss a lot. Oh except bad acting and terrible hairstyles, but you can get that from Eastenders can't you, ha, ha.

I agree.

Pigsy wasn't quite as attractive as I remembered, and the dubbing looked like it was out of a bad spaghetti western!!

I know you can never recapture a memory, but I think childrens programmes stand up better to this sort of scrutiny. I have cringed in embarassment at the sad fact that I used to love "The Man From Atlantis" (starring a be-webbed Patrick Duffy). And yet, the likes of "Trumpton", "The Clangers" and "Bagpuss" have never let me down. Maybe I'm just in close touch with my inner child...

The Man from Atlantis worried me because I think I have slightly webbed hands...

What is so bad about it now then? I used to love it.

Wooden acting; risible plotlines; very dubious 70s fashions...I think the problem is that your sense of irony gets so well honed over the years (especially so in these jaded post-modern times) that you no longer watch anything with such innocent enjoyment. Except for those comfortingly nostalgic kids programmes.

Webbed hands! You don't have those weird glow-in-the-dark green eyes too?

I did once have some contact lenses which got dyed green and glowed in UV actually.

I had a similar experience when watching Doctor Who episodies that used to scare me rigid as a child. It's just not the safe when you notice the set blowing around in the draft....

Come on! You are the man who finds the odd Buffy episode too scary to watch without peering through your fingers and jumping violently every few seconds. I bet vintage Dr Who would still have you cowering behind the sofa ;)
