I know what you mean about not wanting to throw yourself about for fear of injury... One thing that may help (though obviously after the physio is finished!) is a martial art of some kind. I've just started Jitsu, and although it's quite focused on defense techniques, one of the most important things they try to teach you is how to fall safely, eventually including rolls, and so on.
