My fellow students,

I would like to say this in regards to the Slytherins' reaction to our upcoming detention:

I do not think our response has been childish nor do I think it characterizes us as weak. We are not kicking or screaming or complaining. We are signing a petition. In fact, I think Draco's idea has been by far one of the most mature reactions to this particular situation.

Professor Snape's efforts, which initially held promise, were shown to have little effect on Harry Potter's grades. Many of you have felt this detention was unfair and more so, felt that it was futile.

This petition is a symbol of that. It goes beyond simply being a means to get Slytherins out of detention. (I feel that many of us who signed never felt it would have that effect.) Rather this is a protest - a record of our protest against the unfairness of this particular administrative decision.

Put aside your prejudices and biases because Draco Malfoy, a Slytherin, came up with this brilliant idea, and try to look at the essence of this petition. What you are asked to support is this, and I quote:

"We are signing our names to a statement which asks this type of detention system to be revoked."

It does not say "revoke the Slytherins' dentention" (although, honestly, would it hurt you to aid your fellowman from a similarly undesirable experience as your own? But perhaps the saying is true: misery loves company) rather what this petition asks is that this system of detention be revoked. That this sort of punishment where you give detention to someone other than the person responsible be stopped. That this sort of detention which has happened to you - is happening to us - never occur again. That is what you would be supporting. In its very essence, this petition speaks out on what you have all been saying all along. That this is unfair.

If you would like to offer your support: http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=nocturne_alley&itemid=72542

Thank you,
Pansy Parkinson
