With like... an HOUR to spare, I have my Emmy predictions. I was, obviously, bored... while I wait (impatiently) for news of my new niece's arrival (literally ANY MINUTE now).
Shall we begin?
Yes. Let's shall.
Best Comedy:
I honestly feel The Office had the better year but I predict 30 Rock will take this one. Again. They do every year... And they had more nominations this year than any other tv show... like by DOUBLE. So I think it's kind of a lock. The rest of the shows mentioned here... dunno why bother with them. It's a one-show race.
Will win: 30 Rock
Should win: The Office
Should have been nominated: The Big Bang Theory
Best Actor - Comedy:
Well... I LOVE me some Alec Baldwin and I LOVE me some Jack Donaghey but... I honestly don't think there was a funnier person on TV than The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons. Sheldon has rapidly become the star of that show. The amount of geeky, sciency dialogue combined with the PERFECT delivery should guarantee Parsons takes away a win. Unless Alec Baldwin does.
Will win: Jim Parsons, Big Bang Theory
Should win: Jim Parsons, Big Bang Theory
Might win: Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Best Actress - Comedy:
If Tina Fey does not win this... check the sky for two moons. She is hands down the most talented comedienne working today.
Will win: Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Should win: Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Is it even possible this person might win: Christina Applegate, Samantha Who? (no)
Best Supporting Actor - Comedy:
Like Tina Fey, Neil Patrick Harris seems all but guaranteed to win his award. His nomination is especially earned this year seeing as how Barney grew a bunch of layers after falling in love with Robyn and NPH somehow made it all entirely believable. Rainn Wilson is, of course, a mad comic genius... I kinda want him to win but I think NPH is unstoppable - especially since Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan will likely split the vote of the 30 Rock fans.
Will win: Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
Should win: Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
Why isn't this person nominated: John Krasinski, The Office
Best Supporting Actress - Comedy:
This one sort of feels like a toss-up - as though any of these actresses could win BUT only losers take the easy way out. I'm throwing my support behing Kristin Wiig. Amy Poehler is DAMN funny and was pretty freaking brilliant on Saturday Night Live last year but she only worked half of the season. Kristin Wiig remains the only reason to watch SNL.
Will win: Kristin Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Should win: Kristin Wiig, Saturday Night Live
Might win: Amy Poehler, Saturday Night Live
Best Drama:
This is where my predictions are likely to roll off the rails in spectacular fashion... since I don't actually WATCH most of the dramas nominated in any of the drama categories. I watch Lost and House and that's it. but I've seen an episode of Big Love and I want to watch both Dexter and Mad Men so I'm more than qualified to make a guess. Mad Men seems to the be strong favourite so I'ma go with that... though sentimentally, I feel Lost's last season was it's strongest and it should win. But that's just me and I don't vote.
Will win: Mad Men
Should win: Lost
Why wasn't this show nominated: The Shield
Best Actor - Drama:
A) The Mentalist is the lamest name for a show ever so Simon Baker shouldn't win just based on principle. 2) I think any of Jon Hamm, Bryan Cranston or Michael C Hall could easily win. They're all on critically acclaimed shows that get a lot of buzz. 3) Gabriel Byrne is... Gabriel Byrne so we can't count him out. 4) Hugh Laurie has to recite an hour of medical dialogue in an accent that isn't his own while also faking a limp and constantly working with a prop (his cane) so to me... he should be a lock. But he won't win.
Will win: Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Should win: Hugh Laurie, House
Why isn't his name on the list: Michael Chiklis, The Shield
Best Actress - Drama:
Can I vote for The X-Files' Gillian Anderson? Because she deserved a shelf load of these. No? DAMN. Tosses a coin....... Kyra Sedgwick? Why not? Mariska Hargitay is a decent bet as well... she's won before but SVU was kinda so-so this last year. Elizabeth Moss is the token Mad Men nomination but I hear her role isn't so widely considered a "leading" role. People really seem to like Sally Field (for some reason) and Glenn Close and Holly Hunter are both like... totally awesome. Meh. Could be anyone. Especially considering the one actress that SHOULD have been nominated was not. Hmph.
Will win: Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer
Should win: Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost
Sentimental fave: Gillian Anderson, The X-Files
Best Supporting Actor - Drama:
Dood. I don't even know who two of these guys are. I mean I know who Christian Clemonson (Boston Legal) is by lookin' at him (he's one of those "Ooooh THAT guy" kind of actors) but Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad)?? Who again? Doesn't mean he can't win. I don't watch that show but he could win. I hear it's good. William Hurt... wait... he's a freaking OSCAR winner. William Shatner... K I got nothing to say aboot that. John Slattery could win based on the fact that he's on Mad Men but I'm gonna go with Michael Emerson who may not necessarily deserve a win for this last season... but for ALL of his years on Lost.
Will Win: Michael Emerson, Lost
Should win: Michael Emerson, Lost
Should ACTUALLY win: Walton Coggins, The Shield
Best Supporting Actress - Drama:
Meh. I watched 24... but I dunno if Cherry Jones was ALL THAT to deserve a nomination here... certainly not a victory. I have no idea what craziness Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson were up to on Grey's Anatomy since I gave up on that show a while ago. I dunno if enough people care about Damages to vote for Rose Byrne. I think it might go to one of the In Treatment actresses and the coin toss goes to... Diane Wiest. Why not?
Will win: Diane Wiest, In Treatment
Should win: I have no idea
Could win: Sandra Oh or Chandra Wilson, Grey's Anatomy
Best Reality Competition Show:
Nominees: Amazing Race, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Project Runway, Top Chef
Will win: Amazing Race
Should win: Top Chef
Reality Series:
Nominees: Antiques Roadshow, Dirty Jobs, Dog Whisperer, Intervention, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, MythBusters
Will win: Intervention
Should win: Dirty Jobs
Reality Show Host:
Nominees: Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars), Phil Keoghan (Amazing Race), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio (Top Chef), Jeff Probst (Survivor), Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
Will win: Phil Keoghan, Amazing Race
Should win: Padma Laksmi and Tom Colicchio, Top chef
Variety, Music or Comedy Series:
Nominees: Colbert Report, Daily Show with John Stewart, Late Show with David Letterman, Real Time with Bill Maher, Saturday Night Live
Will win: Daily Show with John Stewart
Should win: Late Night with Conan O'Brien
I'm not gonna go any further because I won't have time and don't really care. So I'm guessing neither do you.
Random:
The biggest ommissions this year were mainly from Lost (Elizabeth Mitchell and Josh Holloway OWNED that show this year), The Shield (really? There wasn't a more intense series of episodes than the last four or five of The Shield and frankly there should have been noms for Michael Chiklis, Walton Coggins and CCH Pounder... ridiculous) and Battlestar Galactica - the most underappreciated drama that used to be on television. But I don't make the lists... I just complain about them.
Can we seriously get over Grey's Anatomy??? It's easily the most overrated show on Earth. Plus, thank goodness Boston Legal is over because I'm pretty tired of William Shatner. Just sayin'.
Looking forward to the telecast with Neil Patrick Harris as host. I hear there'll be a Dr. Horrible musical number... which I can forgive because it's NPH and Joss Whedon. Thus, it will be awesome.
That's it! And I made it in time. :D
