I too feel the Society is in decline for a number of reasons. For years I tried to chalk it up to nostalgia and "old phart" syndrome, but the game really has shifted fundamentally in its values, purpose and the general way in which it is played.

Is it worse now? Well I guess it depends on what you wanted out of the game in the first place. For those who are new and find lots of things to inspire and motivate them - wonderful!

There are those like myself, who have found that many things we loved are gone and we are not as keen on the things that have, or have not, replaced them. There are some things we do better, some things we do worse and some things we don't do at all. There are new irritating things that have sprung up and become part of the game. It's an evolving game, and the new players have remade it to their own preferences, which, for the most part, are not mine.

C'est la vie!

I left with a few questions my self.

My question now is how much of it is reginal and how much is society. I hear about some amazing events that happen in other kingdoms. Is is something lacking in the Kingdom or Barony. I think i have to admit its a little of all three.

Is the Society destiny to break up into smaller living history groups. Dark being a examples.

And Menken Brings up a point about the people who were house hold names. Not to sound too much like a pulp fantasy novel but is the "Time of Legends" over. Is the Society now too big to make a name for your self over the mass of people.

Oh and that reminds me to ask, I know in the early days the SCA it doubled as a fantasy fan club, like how Mordain is actually a half-elf persona, and with all the talk of hobbits and halflings. Is Menken ordinal persona a hob.... Never mind i don't want to get beaten up when I get back

1. All three levels - Society, Kingdom and Barony (especially).
2. Yes - this has been happening in dribs and drabs for years, and will likely accelerate due to legal stuff (various lawsuits) happening in the US.
3. There are certainly new legends, people doing amazing stuff that we couldn't have hoped to accomplish 30 years ago, but the Society has become so diffuse and there are so many other distractions (i.e. other outlets for people with medieval interests) that their impact and fame is proportionally decreased.
4. Let us be clear: MENKEN'S PERSONA HAS ALWAYS BEEN 14TH CENTURY - AND HUMAN! The people that have/had weird elfish personas (e.g. Sir Mordain, Duke Laurelyn) came to the SCA by way of Tolkien/D&D. I wasn't into that stuff and consequently started with a historically-based persona.
