I believe the tubes work just like light bulbs. When they make light bulbs they put something in them called "getting" (or something like that), which is designed to burn off absorbing any residual oxygen that was not evacuated during manufacture. If not for that stuff, some tubes and bulbs would fail right away from the working components burning up with the oxygen. I know that's how bulbs work and I'm guessing the same applies to tubes. The smell would be the "getting" buring off.

I think needing people to experience and enjoy your efforts is a healthy thing. It's different from needing other people to validate your existence, etc. Being able to perform art, deduce scientific truths, or just sit down with one other person for a nice conversation would just not be enjoyable without other people appreciating it. (I guess the last example wouldn't even be possible.)
