Just got a series of texts from MIT Police about a shooter on campus.  Turns out that the shooter didn't actually get quite into campus, but was at the corner of Portsmouth and Main.  You know, where Draper is.  Yes, there is/was a real shooter there.  And the text gave a lot of information about how to take cover, shelter, etc.  (i.e., cower ( Read more... )

I saw this on the Cambridge Police Department feed and it was chilling. I agree, the campus seemed safer from things like this when I was there.

It's really only been in the past two or three years that it's gotten to be regular--or even a thing at all. Used to be MIT police texts were about missing bicycles or such. It's just *very* recently that we have had so many threatening events.

Strange - I was at this exact location (the Cambridge Caribbean Carnival) from 3:30 to 4:30, supposedly while this was going on, and yet never saw or heard anything. Certainly nobody tried to clear the streets or sidewalks of festival-goers.

I find that strange indeed! I would have thought that the police would have cleared the area. It was in the paper today and they're still trying to catch the perpetrator.

Thank you! We do try to keep safe and the campus is *usually* one of the safest places I've ever been. But they do have a propensity for sending out frightening texts!
