I'm kind of assuming that's what did it, since the system crashed right after I pulled the plug, then wouldn't boot up. Seems a fairly clear cut cause/effect, though for the life of me I don't know how or why it may have caused that much damage.

Given that the interface for floppies was designed in the mid-80s, I'm not surprised that hot-plugging wasn't included in the protocol.
