The whispers of fear, the chills up the spine...

Backdated to September 5, after this post.

Melchior paces back and forth, in and out of his room, up and down the hallway, for what feels like hours after Moritz flees. He wants to be sure that he won't run into Moritz because, for once in Melchior's life, Moritz is the last person he wants to see. After their fight, what would they do if they ( Read more... )

Mohinder had been working late at the compound again. It wasn't that he meant to hide from his friends, only that he'd needed some time to himself after the consciousness transfer.

He stepped outside to catch a breath of fresh air and very nearly ran into Melchior, who seemed to have the same idea. "Hello, Melchior."

"Oh -- " He looks up quickly, though he isn't really afraid it could be Moritz. That voice could never be mistaken for Moritz's thick German one. "Hello." At first Melchior is annoyed to have someone there invading his thoughts. He'd buried himself so far into his own mind that hearing a voice from outside his own head was startling.

After a second's thought, however, he reconsiders. This isn't just anyone -- this is probably the smartest and most reasonable person he's met in his entire life. Maybe he could benefit from a talk with him. "How are you?"

Perhaps it'd been more than needing time to himself, he considered when he didn't have a good answer to Melchior's polite question. "Well enough," Mohinder said, a dismissive note creeping into his voice to discourage further inquiry.

A second glance at Melchior suggested he might not be especially well, his breathing shorter and sharper than would be characteristic and his expression somehow...off. "Did I disturb you? You seem a bit out of sorts." It was a bit of a leap, but he'd seen Melchior upset several times now, so perhaps not as much of one as it might have been with someone else.

He hears the sharpness of Mohinder's voice and for a moment is selfishly grateful that Mohinder seems eager avoid any discussion of what's troubling him. Almost immediately he regrets it and corrects himself -- he'll just have to be sure to ask Mohinder further about it when he seems open to it.

How is it that Melchior always runs into Mohinder when he's troubled? Maybe it's fortunate -- he does always seem to be able to help Melchior. "I have just had a fight with my friend, Moritz." To him that seems shocking without further explanation, considering how rarely he and Moritz fight, but he realized Mohinder wouldn't be in on that bit of information. "I cannot remember the last time we fought like this."
