Feminism, Sci-Fi, and BSG

I've been wanting to sit down and basically write an essay on various female stereotypes and their relation to the progression of feminism in sci-fi for a while now. I'm stuck at work for the next 3 hours, so this is as good a time as any. Also, as I was considering the stereotypes, I realized that Battlestar Galactica had a lot of them and many ( Read more... )

What a fabulous way of framing the argument, and I agree on all counts. I don't watch BSG (although, I'm drawn to it and am recording it on the DVR as I type), but the others are definitely spot-on. I had no idea Buffy became a lesbian, by the way. :O Ah well..

And......WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!? *ahem* :D

And.. do you watch Doctor Who by any chance?

Yeah, the Buffy lesbian thing came totally out of left field. You should read Buffy Season 8, though, it's way better than the show was at the end.

I'm not much for LJ anymore, I'm afraid. Don't have much to say.

And, yes, I do watch Doctor Who. Because it's amazing.

This is very good. I hope that you are planning to continue with this idea. I found a very interesting master's thesis online about the female characters in Dune; you might like it. Also, there is the issue with not allowing female characters to develop past adolescence. I notice this a lot with Buffy. At the beginning, the stereotypes made sense. Giles is an adult and the rest are 16. However, they turn 21+ and are still behaving as children. So don't forget the whole "woman as child, man as adult" thing.

Yeah, especially in season 6. Giles leaves and Buffy is, what? 20? 21? And her entire life falls apart without him, which he actually jokes about when he comes back. It's really frustrating, because I think Joss did want to make a strong, progressive show and he accidentally undermined it the whole time.
