[Background]
Fruits Basket starts off with the story of the Jyuunishi. The animals were called to partake in a banquet with the God for New Year's Eve. The cat however was not able to attend the banquet as he was tricked by the rat into believing that it was to be held the day after. Having missing the banquet, the cat was not recognized as part of the Jyuunishi and was treated as an outcast. This sparked the beginning the heated relationship between rat and cat. Unfortunately for Kyou, he was one of those cursed by the spirit of the cat.
When Kyou was a child, his mother was very protective of him and always reassured him that she loved him. Deep down, he knew that she was actually scared of his true form. She did not want to acknowledge the fact that her son was born cursed by the spirit of the cat, thus made it so Kyou lived a sheltered childhood. She eventually committed suicide by throwing herself at an oncoming train. Kyou's father blamed Kyou for his wife's death, saying that she suffered because she had loved her son so much.
Kyou was then taken in by Kazuma Sohma as he was the only one who believed that the boy did not lead his mother to suicide. Kazuma had first taken Kyou in to make up for his mistakes of ignoring his grandfather who was the former cat. He eventually came to love Kyou as if he were his own son. He acted as Kyou's foster father and taught Kyou to actually live, outside of the Sohma estate. It is said that Kazuma was the first person to show Kyou actual love.
He first appears in the manga - after disappearing into the mountains with Kazuma for training - when he bursts through the roof of Shigure’s house and attacks Yuki, who happens to be the rat. Unfortunately for him, Tohru’s clumsiness causes him, Yuki and Shigure to transform into their animal counterparts. He loses his temper because of the turn of events and accidentally wounds Tohru. He and Yuki then fight and Yuki emerges the winner. When Yuki and Tohru come home from school, Tohru finds Kyou patching the hole on the roof as a means of sorry but is interrupted and he storms out of the room. His attitude towards Tohru was harsh in the beginning but they slowly become friends as Kyou tries to remedy his anger issues. He then begins life under Shigure's roof together with Tohru and Yuki, and starts school at Kaibara High, under Akito’s orders.
Kagura is introduced soon after. She is madly in love with Kyou, even if he does not return her feelings. In fact, he hates whenever she always charges into things due to her nature as the boar of the Jyuunishi. She uses the curse to her advantage by getting close to hug Kyou without any consequence, much to Kyou's dismay.
Roughly a month into Kyou's second year of high school, Tohru asks Shigure if she could visit her mother’s grave on the day of her death anniversary. Shigure allows her to do so and Kyou and Yuki come along. Saki and Uotani meet the trio there to pay there respects as well. As they stand before Kyoko’s grave, Saki questioned Kyou seemed to be filled with regret and chaos as he looked on. Kyou seems surprised by her choice of words but does not pursue the topic. He is later seen asking a sleeping Tohru for forgiveness, but it is not mentioned what for until later into the series.
Kyou is then visited by Kazuma. He is thrilled to see his master not having seen him since their training in the mountains. He immediately asks if he could go back to living in Kazuma’s house but is declined. Kazuma reasons that it looked like Kyou could be healed if he stayed in Shigure’s house longer. Kyou lies and says that he hated it there and that he did not want to be healed nor did he ask for it. Kazuma’s real motive is revealed when he takes Kyou out and intentionally removes his bracelet in front of Tohru. Kyou, ashamed of his true form, immediately runs away from the scene, leaving both Kazuma and Tohru behind.
Tohru eventually decides to run after him but when she does, he tries his best to get rid of her thinking that he would only make her miserable, that she may suffer the same fate of his mother’s. Tohru’s retreating form relieves him but he is taken by surprises when she runs back to him and - in spite of her fear and uncertainty - begs him to come back. He is surprised but the concern she shows for him and is glad that she is scared because it was proof that she saw his “ugliness”. He transforms back into his human form, silently thanks her for understanding him and pulls her into a hug. She carries him in his cat form back home, where Kazuma greets them both.
Kyou wakes up the next morning, immediately going after Kazuma, who had left earlier that day. He chased after his master, apologizing for acting like a spoiled kid in spite of all the things Kazuma had gone through for his sake. He also vows that he would be the kind of guy who is worthy of calling Kazuma his dad.
Later, when Kyou and Tohru visit’s Kazuma’s home, Kazuma is called out for a meeting with Kyou’s biological father. Kyou’s father asks Kazuma to cooperate in locking Kyou up in the cat’s room when Kyou graduates from high school. His father even goes to the extent of saying that he still hasn’t forgiven Kyou for his wife’s death. Kazuma then comments on how Kyou’s father was similar to Kyou before and that Kyou had finally risen from his despair and was finally growing. He says that Kyou’s father will never understand before he gets back on his feet and takes his leave. Kyou asks Kazuma what was wrong but only received a pat on the head as a reply.
The younger Jyuunishi, as well as Tohru, spend their summer at a beach near a Sohma vacation home. The fun is cut short when Akito, the head of the Sohma clan and the human representation of their god, arrives. All the Jyuunishi but Kyou are called to meet with Akito. This worries Tohru as Kyou is once again left out because he is the cat. Kyou though brushes it off as if it were nothing, saying that he was used to this and that she should not dwell on it too much.
During one of the days that the two are left alone, they talk about Kyou’s bracelet. Kyou explains that it was made by a priest with the use of human bones and blood. He feels guilty that a human life was sacrificed just so the seal could be made for those cursed by the cat.
Kyou is eventually called to meet with Akito and this shocks both him and Tohru. He thinks that it’s rather dubious that he be called now but heads over anyway. Akito immediately asks if Kyou had finally beaten Yuki in a fight. This is when it is finally revealed that the two had made a bet. If Kyou could beat Yuki even once, then he will finally be accepted into the Jyuunishi, however if Kyou fails, he will be locked up in the Cat’s Room from when he graduates from high school until his death.
Akito suddenly changes the subject asking why Kyou could stand that ugly woman (Tohru). Kyou tells Akito to shut up, saying that he did not know what had really happened when Kyou transformed into the cat’s true form. He explains that Tohru accepted his ugliness despite her fear. That she fought it just to be able to help him return. It is also then that he realizes that he has fallen in love with the girl.
Kyou however realizes that being his loving her may only bring her hurt. He does not want a repeat of what had happened to his own mother because of him and denies that he cares for Tohru. He says that he won’t love and collapses to the floor. Akito leans down to hold Kyou in her arms saying that he will never be able to defeat Yuki, that his confinement is decided.
He immediately searches for Tohru as he returns to the summer home. He silently promises himself that he will find a place when both he and Tohru could stay forever, deciding that he will spend the rest of his remaining time wisely with her.
Upon returning from the vacation, Kagura asks Kyou on a date. She leads him to a small field where the two had played when they were younger. She confesses to him that after seeing his true form, she felt sorry for him and continued to befriend him out of pity. This eventually lead to her loving him, he emotions and feelings for Kyou true and untainted by the idea of the curse. Kyou pulls her to his chest and thanks her for caring for him, all the while apologizing that he could not return her love in the same way.
During the parent-teacher conference in planning the child’s future, Kyou’s reluctance about the topic shows as he is probably thinking that it is useless, that he would be imprisoned anyway. Kazuma does not say anything against this, instead making a joke with Mayuko that it was quite hard to imagine Kyou as a college student or as a working man. Kyou questions why Kazuma did not say anything. Kazuma simply replies that it is not up to the parent to decide what future their child should take.
Kyou and the rest of his class go on a trip to Kyoto and Nara (according to Yuki in earlier chapters). A girl confesses to him then but he merely brushes her off, saying that he isn’t interested. Tohru asks him what that was about. He replies that it has nothing to do with her. It is during the trip where it becomes obvious that even though Kyou still needs to learn to choose his words wisely, he truly does want to spend time with Tohru.
[Personality]
Kyou usually comes off as brash, short-tempered and rude to most people. He is also quite foul-mouthed and easily angered. He eventually softens up, trying to control his anger and keep his voice down when he is agitated. Many say that the change was thanks to Tohru’s influence on Kyou.
He is not very social, pushing away others those who want to help him, and he admits to it. “I can’t help it. I’m not made for interacting with people,” were his exact words. Having gone through so much, Kyou finds it hard to open up and convey his feelings, keeping most of them to himself. However, he has a tendency of being quite protective of those he cares for.
His hatred for the rat is so strong, that he is easily baited into challenges as long as it was against Yuki. A good example of this behaviour is shown during the beach trip when Kyou is about to exit the water refusing to race with Haru, but flipping one-eighty when Yuki said that he would join the race. However, it is later revealed that he was jealous of Yuki and admired him from afar, wishing that he could be more like him.
Probably because he is the cat of the Jyuunishi, Kyou exhibits many traits similar to that of an actual cat. He has an affinity for high places, usually climbing to the roof of Shigure’s house whenever he needs some time to himself to think. He also becomes sluggish and out of energy whenever it rains.
Despite the curse, Kyou is basically a confused teenage boy still figuring out where he is headed and what he wants from his life. It is probably because of the knowledge that he would be locked up as soon as he finishes high school that he is hesitant about making his own decisions and looking too far into the future.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Kyou having trained in martial arts under the guidance of his foster father and master, Kazuma, has a black belt in martial arts so he could put up a good fight against most fighters.
Due to the curse of the Jyuunishi, Kyou turns into a cat when his body undergoes a great deal of stress (such as sickness) or when he is hugged by a female who is not cursed by the Jyuunishi. It isn't explained why it happens, just that it has always been that way.
Those possessed by the cat can also take form of a grotesque monster. It releases a putrid stench and looks somewhat like a mutated rabbit. This is the cat’s true form. However, it form is sealed by the charmed bracelet that Kyou wears. The bracelet is made up of round white and red beads which is said to have been made by a monk using human bones and blood.
Much to his dismay, he attracts cats even if he isn't in his cat form. They gather near or around him and are affected even more when he projects strong emotions.
[Affection]
Kyou isn't very touchy-feely, especially because of the curse. He usually only goes as far as holding hands.
[Fighting]
Kyou is a relatively good fighter, what with him being a black-belter. He trains very diligently as to be sure that he doesn't get rusty. Aaaand there's a huge chance that he will fight another character if said character provokes him. If Kyou really dislikes him/her, on the other hand, he may just initiate the fight himself.
