A little tip to help make one step quicker for you in the future, instead of creating a new layer, placing it under the text and then merging them, you'd get the same effect by simply rasterizing it.
Right-click on your text layer in the layers window and select Rasterize Type. It turns the text into a normal layer. :)
I should have say that *L* I usually use few different text layers, so merging them to one is faster, as I later play with blending modes and so on... I suppose it's just one of those things I do.
