Canon Point: A few months after initally leaving Nibelheim, but before his first appearance in Crisis Core. He's still new in the military, but mostly settled in by now.

Setting: The Planet, or Gaia as it is also known as, is similiar to an earth-like environment, with some pretty dramatic twists.

For one, the entire Planet lives, breathes, and thrives on the souls of those living on it, caught in an endless cycle of life and death. When people die on Gaia, they don't simply... die. Their bodies fade to become the Planet's energy, almost being recycled to keep the world alive. Because of this, falling directly into the Lifestream would be extremely hazardous, almost deadly because of the millions and millions of souls, their collective thoughts, feelings, and dreams, all merging into one.

This energy could also be translated into 'mako', which is used by the ShinRa Electric Power Company to support thousands of lives daily. The mako is converted, materialized to power the most basic needs for human life - heat, electricity, water, etc. And because this is pulling energy directly out of the Planet, in which some believe is slowly killing it, there are forces that want to put a stop to ShinRa once and for all. In this case, ShinRa also serves as a military base, with several different divisions - SOLDIER being the highest.

Below that, and below the Turks, is the Infantry Division, which houses garden-grade troops. They don't hold the abilities that SOLDIERs wield, and most don't even harness the level of intelligence that Turks hold. No, these are just normal men (and possibly women), doing their jobs to keep the peace and help out wherever possible.

Moving on to a more physical nature, Gaia is composed of only three majour continents, with several, neighbouring islands surrounding the bigger masses.

Starting off on the Eastern Continent is where the ShinRa Electric Power Company is seated. The land around Midgar, the city the company takes base, is dead and dried due to the lack of mako, and only moves out so far before the land becomes lush again. From here, smaller towns lead off into the mountains, past the swamp and leading to the other side of the Continent. Fort Condor, and Junon are two more notiable locations - one being an old mako reactor, nested upon by a giant condor and serving as a smaller, more primitive military base. The other, Junon, is Midgar's secondary base, housing a giant cannon that overlooks the sea spanning out. Junon also covers a smaller, poorer town, but is nowhere the size of Midgar.

Cloud's home, Nibelheim, rests on the Western Continent, which houses more of the lesser-known and often-overlooked areas by the ShinRa Company. Most of the West is composed of smaller villages, a canyon, and several rivers and ravines spreading all over the landmass. Nibelheim, more specifically, is a village hidden within some of the largest mountains on the Continent, with its own mako reactor buried deep within. It is not often visited, and because it is so far out of the way, many vehicles cannot travel there easily. Only one truck rests within the village itself, but it is damaged beyond repair.

Nibel Mountain is inhabited with a various degree of monsters and steep cliffs, some of which even SOLDIERs would have difficulty navigating through, much less children. The land there is also cold and dead, possibly from the active reactor, and may possibly even be the cause for the juiced-up monsters. Because the reactor is sealed, and because Nibelheim is so rarely visited, very few know what's actually *inside*. Could be just a reactor, could be something else. It's been ignored for all this time, anyway.

Most of Cloud's life was spent in Nibelheim, in the tiny village wedged between the mountains - up until his time at ShinRa, he had never traveled the world. Nibeheim was small, almost suffocating in a sense. Cloud knew he wanted to expand beyond that, beyond that little backwater town. So he left on a journey across the Continent, to the East, where Midgar was. He left Nibelheim behind, vowing not to look back until he was larger than life.

Getting the chance to, seeing the sights, he finds it much more diverse than what he'd originally imagined. So many towns, so many new places that were such a change from the repetitive surroundings he'd known all his life. And upon arriving in Midgar, his first impressions of the city could only be summed up as, "Wow." Nibelheim was only a fraction of this whole new world, if even, and the experience is very startling for him.

For the young boy from the nobody town, Midgar was much bigger than he had ever anticipated. What held it together, what served as the heart... ShinRa was an even bigger adventure waiting to happen.

Personality: Because Cloud had lost his father at such a young age, he'd never had much of a male figure in his life to guide him. It was always his mother, who was there whenever he felt down, or was picked on by the other kids. And because they had acted so untoward to him, he began to feel a sense of superiority even though he didn't exercise it much at all. He was always different, always weird. It hurt him more than anyone knew.

To Cloud, the ideal person was, and always will be the SOLDIERs of ShinRa. The good men that performed their duties so nobily, the Knights in Shining Armour that always got the job done. A SOLDIER was the typical save-the-day-sit-in-a-parade-and-kiss-babies persona, something he'd yearned to adopt apart from the boring nobody he was at home. If one were to tell Cloud he could never make it into SOLDIER, it'd be a harsher blow than the news of his father's death. He just wouldn't take that.

Seeing reports of Sephiroth in the newpapers, hearing about all of the heroic actions he'd performed in SOLDIER... Cloud knew. Cloud strived to be like that. Helping people, being noticed, being perfect like Sephiroth was. He wanted to change from his soldarity in the little backwater town.

He wanted to be a hero.

SOLDIERs were heroes, but they all had been normal people like him at some point too, right? So maybe he could do it... somehow. He'd make his mother proud, make Tifa notice him, and get back all the years he'd lost to ridicule. Cloud started to feel a sense of superiority over the other kids, and though he never really exercised it, it was there. He would be Sephiroth, and nothing they said or did would change that.

A certain incident would actually help it.

After his and Tifa's collapse over the bridge, he'd blamed himself for her coma. And when she recovered, his resolve was strong. He would leave Nibelheim, and return one day as a hero.

He's been at ShinRa for a good year since then, and those doubts are burying themselves down deeper and deeper. They're still there, but he can slap on a good facade, walk off like everything's fine. He still keeps to himself a lot, which would be a difficult habit to break in itself, but once he gets talking, there's no stopping him.

Unlike his older self, Cloud is a little more open to conversation and willing to let people help out. Cloud may not say much, but he means business when it all comes down to it, and is in no possible way weak or a coward. He stands up for what he believes in, without any backing down.

Still in his younger years, Cloud can... have some temper issues, alongside that. He's frustrated with himself, with his home life and working towards SOLDIER. This could mean various bouts of violence if triggered properly - possibly even towards people who don't truly deserve it. He's working on fixing it, and it has gotten better over the year he's been at ShinRa.

Maybe he just needs a friend?

Once Cloud gets to know a person, however, he tends to open up more, and even jokes around from time to time, being almost sarcastic. Cloud is naive, and very trusting to those who seem decent enough back. Complex matters often fly over his head, leaving him often left out of the joke or conversation.

Hey, he's still a kid.

Above everything else, Cloud mostly yearns for attention. He wants to be noticed, to be somebody. He will take great risks, without even thinking of what those risks are, and simply go with the flow until something happens, and is always willing to help out and protect his allies. He wants friends, he wants to be liked, he wants to be important. Certain things, he is hesitant to face, but give him time, and he'll find the courage to do it.

In a nutshell, Cloud's general outlook on life has improved, for the most part. He's a happy kid, happy with his life at ShinRa. So he's not quite a SOLDIER yet. It's only been a year. And though he still seems pretty withdrawn, he can easily be anyone's friend. Heck, call him a dork, he doesn't mind. He'd rather be one and in the company of people who can relax with him than people who want nothing to do with him.

But like anyone else, Cloud has his problems, and he's... still not quite used to dealing with them well. Not like Sephiroth can, because Sephiroth is still much better than him. That makes it worse, brings those doubts back up.

If Cloud has doubts, then things get worse. And when things get worse, people get hurt. Wasn't that what he came to ShinRa to fix? He can't contradict his own promise. So he takes a breather, finds his center, so to speak. And once he does, he gets his second wind. He bounces back quickly, not letting anything get in the way of his duties.

Abilities, Weaknesses, and Power Limitation Suggestions: Cloud's 'powers' range to only basic military combat - punching, kicking, shooting, the works. Other than that, Cloud doesn't have anything very remarkable to power down.

Inventory: If weakened, there wouldn't be much of a difference between him and the strength of a normal man just yet, though his primary means of defense is the ShinRa-Issue M4.

Upon arriving, the weapon would be jammed, if not clogged enough to the point of uselessness. If stressed enough, it could possibly even backfire on him.

Appearance: With his infamous spiky, blonde hair and piercing, deep blue eyes, it would seem that this guy has all the makings of a true, full-fledged hero. Often mocked for his small size, he makes up for it in the heat of battle, being able to move swiftly. Having lived in the mountains as well, Cloud's skin is almost ghostly pale to the point of where it should be unhealthy. Perhaps ShinRa couldn't afford any tanning beds in the Training Room? Or he just didn't feel like using them?

A typical uniform in the Infantry Division is nothing short of unremarkable as well. From the neck down, a thick, green scarf covers most of it, draping over his shoulders a bit and consealing a bit of his chin. This, combined with the nightvision helmet, would completely hide his identity even from those who know him.

Moving downward is two pauldrons buckling over a dark blue uniform, with even darker pants protected by two knee-guards, and tucking into a pair of mountain-boots. The boots, and the pants are held together by criss-crossing buckles - better to keep from tripping over in extreme conditions, and worn for effiency in battle.

Samples ;
Log Sample: Two weeks here, in an alternate dimension. And though he had the option of going back home, of going to 'Sleep' as people said it, he... somehow didn't want to. With this Bending, a duty, and being Woken up for a reason, he felt he had more purpose here than he ever would back home. Granted, it meant nobody there would see him accomplishing these things, but did it matter in the long run, if he couldn't change the course of time anyway?

Tifa was here. That was reason enough.

She couldn't see him yet. Not like... this. Not the Nibelheim failure who couldn't even get into SOLDIER and was nothing more than a lowly grunt, taking orders up the ass from someone who had far more years of experience. He'd fix that soon enough, with however long it took.

This wasn't the time to be thinking like that, though. It was a cool, balmy night - the chaos of the day dulling down to this one, quiet moment. He should have been preparing for bed, still used to the habit of 'early to bed, early to rise', but with nobody here to reprimand me for doing so, that habit was slowly being broken. And with that, an even more unusual one was forming.

Sandwiches at 11 in the evening.

His gun was placed to the side of the table, the tri-lighted helmet resting on the dinner table. His hair was a bit mucked from wearing it so long, some of the spikes drooping on the very top of his head. But that was alright. Nothing a shower wouldn't fix. One gloved hand gave the unruly spikes a quick ruffle, making them even more tangled than ever before, then his attention turned to the sandwich he'd been yearning to prepare all day.

Sometimes, the simpliest things made life so much better.

Network Sample: All available units - respond. What's the situation?

[The boy's voice is young, if not familiar to some, as he struggles not to sound distressed over the feed. He'd been on a truck before this, going on a mission...]

Why aren't they-- Hey, come on! This is serious! Location unknown, requesting backup. Is anyone there?

[The boy sighs in irritation, struggling to shut the feed, but... finds he can't. Instead, the transmission switches to video, and the helmet of a ShinRa Infantryman can be seen. His eyes are hidden from view, though he looks genuinely surprised that the device suddenly has a mind of its own.]

...

[And now he's calmer. Or... a certain degree of calmer. He doesn't look very thrilled about this new and bizarre turn of events.]

This is Cloud Strife of the Infantry Division, of the ShinRa Electric Power Company. If there's anyone here, if anyone can help me get to where I was going, I can pay with whatever Gil I have left.
I need to get home.
