It's actually "leal" in the books, which has about the same meaning as "loyal" (faithful, true). So that, at least, is not a mispronounciation.

Ah, thanks -- that was one I wanted to check vs. print, but not having a print copy handy, I poked some fan wikis, and found references to "loyal", but didn't know the right spelling to check "leal".

I've read, somewhere, that Roy Dotrice had health issues that kept him from accepting the role as Grand Maester Pycelle in the TV series. I would not be surprised that the same health issues were effecting him when he read A Dance with Dragons. If he was struggling with health issues, I could see that aggravating some of his issues as an audio book reader.

FWIW, where I'm at about half-way through A Storm of Swords, I'm starting to see your issues with inner monologue vs. dialog. I'm also noticing that Jamie and Tyrion have the same voice.

I also noticed that my Audible library shows John Lee as the narrator for A Feast for Crows.

Ye; it's been a while since I listened to that one, but I wish they're had him back for Dance, or someone else. Jamie and Tyrion, as brothers, at least plausibly have similar voices.
