painful memories

i never said i loved you
i did this to hold myself back
to keep my distance from you
not sure how you would react
with this knowledge of me
not sure how it would change us
fear gripped me oh so tightly
afraid to put my trust
in something so frail as a word
something so powerful as this
something muttered under my breath so it wouldnt be heard
something held
