“A Saju Café?*” Shin asked. They were both standing in front of an old establishment that has an ambiguous modern style.
Hanok* and contemporary architecture was combined to form a unique yet simply wonderful three-floor café, lively with its lightning fixtures strategically placed on the ground and on some bushes around the area; the custom full wall mirror which was shaped in beveled diamond blocks added an illusion and charm to passers-by having a glimpse of the café and the people inside it through the glass panels.
“Mmm-hmm,” Jae-hwa only mumbled as she led Shin inside the café. They were reluctant to enter at first because they were both sopping, but the thought of finding another place seems more tedious now especially since the rain’s still pouring down.
Good thing Min-kyung noona* owns this place. And to think I’ve always teased her about this kind of business…
Jae-joong heaved another sigh as he left Shin seated on the corner of the café and proceeded to look for his sister. As it turned out a little later, the manager of the café, who was new at that time, informed Jae-joong that his sister is not around (or more specifically her friend Min-kyung is not around since he introduced himself to the manager as his girl counterpart Jae-hwa.) He was thankful for it though since he won’t have to reveal and explain what kind of situation he is in to his sister. Also, he had managed to convince the manager that he is a close friend of Min-kyung in order for him and Shin to use the spare room on the third floor to dry themselves up. But before the manager allowed them to go upstairs, he did a set of inquiries to Jae-hwa and ordered her to call Min-kyung to prove and confirm that they were really associates. Jae-joong followed the manager’s requirement and carefully arranged his tone and choice of words when he had spoken to his sister on the other line so that it won’t cause any suspicion on both of them. He even gave his phone to the manager to talk with his sister for him to verify if it was the real Min-kyung, owner of the Saju café, and his employer. After that, the manager finally motioned them to go upstairs.
“That is weird. For a split second I thought Jae-joong-ssi* has a twin sister,” the manager muttered as he eyed the two.
Jae-hwa called Shin and even flicked her arm to come in her direction. Shivering from the fully air-conditioned place, the two of them silently walked up the stairs. Shin was the one who opened the door and went inside first as soon as they reached the room. After eyeing each other for a couple of minutes, Jae-hwa broke the silence.
“Ah, Oppa, you go first… you could shower while I find us clothes to wear -” Damn this situation.
“No, you go first. I can still manage.” There’s still something I ought to do… carelessness could lead to dangerous situations.
“But -”
“You go first, please. And didn’t you say you easily catch cold and flu than most people do? I’m fine, just go ahead,” Shin insisted.
“Well… Mmm, okay. But are you really sure?”
This time Shin glared at Jae-hwa. She really has a stubborn side, huh.
Jae-hwa’s lips formed into a thin line. Why is he so willful?! She then handed Shin a towel she managed to rummage in one of the closets near the door. It was Jae-joong’s second time in the spare room and he was thankful for his memory that he still remembers where things are kept.
And good thing Min-kyung noona* doesn’t arrange things or do clean-up so often.
Just as he was about to go inside the bathroom Shin pulled his right arm.
“Can I borrow your phone?”
“M - My phone?”
“Yes, I need to call someone, and it’s important I call him now. I haven’t had the time to buy myself a new phone so… uhm, but if you don’t want then I can just -”
“What are you saying I don’t want to? H-here take it. Use it at your own leisure Oppa,” Jae-hwa persisted.
He’s not the type who fiddles on things, I guess. Ah, my pictures are all in there! Plus the private photos I took on the boys for a prank! If… if he had a chance on seeing them, what would he think of me now or to Jae-hwa at the least? I still have to keep this act for three weeks! Ah, what should I do?
“Well, are you lending it to me or not?” Shin pried.
“Ah, yes of course. I just have to… uhm, you know, women’s issues. Just wait for a second Oppa,” and Jae-hwa hurriedly put on a security lock to his messages, pictures, and videos folder. Then she returned her phone to Shin and walked away without even turning her back.
What is up with her? And women’s issues, what could that possibly be?
Shin just shrugged and dialed Yang-gaeng’s* number. After the third ring, the man just mentioned a while ago spoke on the other line.
“H - hello?”
“This is Shin speaking, Yang-gaeng.”
“B - boss! You called… from a different number. Have you changed your number for some reason boss?”
“My phone was stolen three days ago. I’m using my girlfriend’s phone as of the moment.”
A cough and a swallowing of lump were heard on the other line. After Yang-gaeng had cleared up his throat he spoke in an inquisitive tone but with a cautious manner.
“Y - You’re dating someone right now, B - boss?”
“I just stated that fact didn’t I? Is there any more reason not to believe that?”
“Well no… of course there isn’t. But you just hint at it Boss, it’s another story. Uhm, Boss, is there anything you wanted me to do?”
“Yes please. Bring me some change of clothes here at Eros Saju Café* the one along Apkujeong-dong and near Cheongdam Park. I was caught up in the rain and got soaked up. I… need the sports duffel bag placed under the files cabinet in my office - inside it are my extra clothes and shoes - you don’t have to open it. As for my girlfriend, please buy some clothes for her. Preferably those that will keep her warm enough, understood?”
What? He’s currently in Korea, since when?
“Yes Boss. Uhm, how about the…”
“The… what?”
“You know… undergarments for her,” Yang-gaeng spoke sensitively.
“Oh that,” Shin’s voice was in an utter surprise.
Of course she hadn’t considered that thought due to various incidents piling up. She contemplated for a moment if she could determine what Jae-hwa’s size is, but a hasty decision took over instead. It was best for Jae-hwa, Shin decided, to say her own size so there won’t be any complications about the matter anymore. So she asked for Yang-gaeng to wait for a while and then proceeded to knock on the bathroom door.
Jae-joong was now on the shower busy thinking of how he could get away with the current problematic situation.
The rain is such a bad timing. I don’t have any clothes left to wear now! Noona’s clothes won’t fit me. There’s no dryer or even hair blower as an alternative to dry my clothes up… plus the wig too! I definitely can’t… run into Shin naked! Plus our first date hasn’t even concluded just yet! This is so damn frustrating!
He was scrubbing his head real hard when he took notice of the knock on the door. It was certainly Shin doing all the noise.
What is it that he wants now?
Annoyed, he poked his head out of the shower curtain and about to shout when he heard a sound and saw that the knob turned, apparently he had forgotten to lock it in all his irritations, and speedy taking off his clothes.
D-A-M-N.
“Jae-hwa?” Before Shin could enter inside the bathroom, Jae-joong hurriedly pulled the shower curtain and rolled his body around it to serve as a cover up. From panicking, the wig that was clumsily hanged on a towel bar next to the shower area fell off. Jae-joong couldn’t control himself from gasping while his heartbeat increased into tenfold.
“Y - yes O - o, Oppa?” he mumbled weakly. He cringed at the sight of the door slightly ajar.
Please don’t come inside. Don’t come inside. He’s not a pervert, is he? Oh shit.
All of a sudden, a chuckle came from Shin who was still outside the bathroom.
“Don’t worry; I’m not going inside, silly. No need to be afraid, really now, Jae-hwa,” and Shin stifled another laugh.
Jae-joong remained silent. He threw all the curses towards Shin inside his head. He could still feel the nervousness and scare that had enveloped his entire body.
“I was knocking but it seemed that you hadn’t heard me… it was just a chance that I had opened up the door because I didn’t thought you’d put all your trust in me seeing as to how you even left the bathroom door unlocked,” Shin mocked Jae-hwa.
“What do you want Oppa?!” Jae-hwa said in a sharp tone.
The water was still running and made pattering noises on the bathroom tiles, but even so, Shin heard her clearly fuming voice. But she just laughed at it all the more. She never knew how much teasing could be fun.
“There’s something I need to ask.”
Silence.
“I just called my assistant to bring me some change of clothes and I already ordered him to bring some for you too… I just need to know some details,” Shin continued as she figured the furious Jae-hwa wouldn’t oblige to answer.
“Details?” Jae-hwa abruptly replied. There was that fear coming back again.
No, wait… he doesn’t mean that…
“What’s your height? Your bra size… those kinds of details.”
Jae-joong felt himself blushed.
Why so frank? How am I supposed to know the latter one? I’m not a girl! I’m not! I don’t have any breast, shit! And why does he sound that this doesn’t concern him? He’s a man for crying out loud… isn’t it an awkward question to ask on a girl? Aish, really that guy!
Another moment of silence.
Shin got the hint that Jae-hwa wasn’t comfortable in answering the question.
Ah, I guess I did something wrong.
“Okay, that’s fine. I’m sorry I was being inconsiderate.”
Silence again. Shin was about to close the door when Jae-hwa spoke, “My height is 178* cm… so please ask your assistant to bring clothes that would fit a woman with that stature and please tell him/her that I’m not petite at all… just uh, medium sized? And uhm, uhm… for my undergarments, I think I’ll just trust that assistant of yours for his/her imagination.”
Shin then closed the door and made another call for Yang-gaeng.
