Fairly examined, truly understood,
No man is wholly bad, nor wholly good.
THEOGNIS OF MEGARA, Fragment XLI

Seungri has an elaborate birthmark on his nape. It was a mark of him having a devil’s heart.

He was in a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don’t predicament. He looked straight to his leather shoes and to the marble floor where he stood. He was currently pinned by three body-build men and he honestly can’t do anything to free his self. He heard the screams and frights of the people around him and he could almost even taste the tension in the air. Suddenly, it reminded him of his grim past.

When Seungri was born, his heart did not beat at all. Horror-stricken thinking that her child was on the verge of death, Seungri’s mother summoned a high-class devil with great powers to perform the dreaded contract. The devil agreed and said his condition, when the boy turned 21, the devil will have to consume his body and get his heart back. One contract has been exchanged. No matter what the reason was, it can’t be revoked. Nobody has ever successfully run away from it, and nobody was ever saved due to it. At that instant, the boy’s fate was sealed; the mark on his nape indicated that he is a prey of a devil.

Seungri’s heart began to pound hard. He was never afraid to die, he only dreaded of dying young. And now that other people’s lives depended on him, dread gripped him all the more.

He vaguely remembered things though. When his mom passed away, his family decided to disown him and be thrown out of their abode.

“He’ll die either way. A life of one person is not enough to make up for numerous lives that will be lost if we still keep him here. Our family can’t afford security nor can we guard ourselves from vicious attacks that will come every day from other devils that would want his heart. It is best to sacrifice him. When his devil comes for him to get his heart back, he’ll die anyway.” His family feared for their own safety… they placed themselves first before him. As a child back then, he hated them; he loathed them for abandoning him. But now, he genuinely thought that it was the logical thing to do. Why should people have to be selfless in this world of selfishness?

“Spare us please!” an anguished woman cried. “Just get that man! Take him and spare us!”

A huge following of agreement from the rest echoed in the room. The Cutters just laughed back at them, they were certainly enjoying their day with all the drama they’re witnessing.

“Didn’t you know?” a man from the farthest left walked across the room. His automatic was dangling on his right hand. “This guy you were all asking to be a sacrificial lamb was just about to do a good deed! A bounty hunter who wanted to capture us convicts. Heh, you lot are funny.”

Silence immediately erupted after the Cutters member had spoken, Seungri then pressed his lips hard. He was in another kind of pickle, much harder to find an easy way out.

“A devil’s heart,” from out of nowhere, a deep, hollow but authoritative voice said, “Tastes good to other devils. They do say it’s the best food for them.”

“Boss!” the armed men exclaimed.

Seungri instantaneously jerked up but the man pulling his chin down was too powerful for him. He had wanted to see the man they were referring to as their boss. He wanted to know if he was his devil but the latter part of what he had said just a while ago made him lose his interest right after hearing it. So he was just another devil wanting to eat him.

“Let me see our hero,” the man commanded to the trio who was locking Seungri like he was just a ball of cloth. The trio obeyed and spun Seungri around so that he’d be able to face their boss when he looked up. When Seungri did, he spotted a lean man dressed in all whites, a direct opposite amongst his followers. He looked a little older than his Dong-wook Hyung and what’s haunting was that he looked so damn innocent despite the gruffly façade and bloodshot eyes. The man smiled and he walked closer towards him.

“Park Hong-jun, I believe it’s right to maintain courtesy even when we are all fuc*ed up,” he introduced himself. The man leaned in closer to him and tried to sniff his scent. Seungri couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was bothering him but as he continued to stare at the man in front of him, there was a budding notion inside him, telling him that something was odd in the situation. In a moment of confusion, he glared at him.

“Aww, he has the right to be angry; he’s being cheated out of his life,” Hong-jun said with a loud laugh, he turned towards his minions and expected a response from them. As the usual resort, they laughed with him. “Don’t you hate that mark young man? It’s like the inner bull in the dartboard where one has to use all luck and skill to be able to hit it... and I was just goddamn lucky to be able to capture you this day.”

“Curse the devil who gave you his heart. He gave you something so burdensome… and curse your mother for her greed, for wanting to alter the fate that was given to you.” It was the reality that was forced upon the young Seungri, but he had always felt, believed and thought otherwise.

“I… don’t hate this mark at all. I don’t feel any hate for this one. After all, it is the main thing that keeps me breathing right now," Seungri caught something along the corner that made him smile, "Human race may disappoint me, but every so often I come across a person that is truly good, and that makes it alright.” Seungri stared at Chaerin whom he found sneaking and prowling in the room. He was glad that the others were all focused to him that they weren’t able to sense that somebody had already gone inside. When nobody cared, she did. Just like before, in a run-down factory, little Chaerin kept him company. It was raining and she provided him some clothes. She kept him warm that night too.

“That’s a noble thing to say, coming from a bounty hunter,” the man named Hong-jun smirked. “If you’re nice to everyone all the time even though they’re harsh to you, you’ll eventually find yourself in cruel situations.” After that statement, lights abruptly went off then. Loud screams once again perpetrated the room and movements from the people could be heard, it’s natural for them to take advantage of the situation and escape. In the dark, Seungri heard Hong-jun growled.

When lights went on again after a full minute, Chaerin emerged at Hong-jun’s side, “I’m going to have to kill you now,” Chaerin quipped as she licked her lower lip, “Guess you’re the one who found himself in a cruel situation?” that being said, she pulled a .38 from her back in a millisecond and fired at the man. Hong-jun’s knees buckled then and his bloodshot eyes became dreamy, if it was still a possibility for him. Everything happened so fast as the Cutters gang fall one by one on their feet. They weren’t even given ample time to react as they just froze and tumbled on the marble flooring like they were some kind of huge dominos being toppled over. Civilians rushed from every directions, they didn’t bother to stop and see that the chaos that the Cutters brought was about to subside.

“How unfortunate,” Seungri said after finally releasing himself from the grasps of the three broad-shouldered men.

“Indeed it is,” laying in a pool of blood, the man said with all bitterness as he watched himself drown in his own blood. His eyes down casted for awhile before it decided to focus on the man’s face before him. “But I don’t think it is more unfortunate… than your own predicament.” Hong-jun even smirked; he had the time to insult someone even though he’s desperately snatching his last breaths.

“Clumsy as always, Seungri-ya,” the woman said as she tossed a pistol towards his side.

“Always my savior, Chaerin-ah,” he quipped and gave her a grin as he reached for the pistol that landed near his right leg.

“I told you already, you should have it imprinted in your mind by now, I’m the only one, the only one who could save you.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Seungri despondently said as he tucked his white shirt in and put a long coat over his body.

“What if I didn’t come on time? What if I couldn’t save your sad as* that time?”

“Oh, but you’re the god of perfect timing, not to mention at my beck and call,” Seungri cheekily commented.

“Seriously, you putting me up on a pedestal will be the death of you,” she first said it in a serious tone but then her complaining face quickly gave out an apologetic smile.

Seungri side-eyed her and he scrunched his lips to form an odd pout. “Naaah. We both know what will be the cause of my death. A little bit of being carefree would change nothing,” he sounded hurt.

“Like I’ve always said, you’re just a gadget-freak, a good, sensible tracker, and you have a fair share of wit but not a fighter…”

“Says who?” Seungri now sounded astounded. He had heard it from her too many times already but he couldn’t just take it.

“Says me and your weakling body.” Chaerin dared, challenging him to refute.

Seungri scrunched his nose to her and was just about to open his mouth when Chaerin abruptly asked, “You hungry?”

“You’re going to order take-out?” Seungri replied without thinking.

Chaerin nodded as she went to sit on the bed near the left bedside table where the phone was located as she readied herself to make a phone call. She smiled to herself as Seungri was being his simple-minded self again.

“Steak and-”

“and ice cream,” not looking at him, she finished his statement.

“You know-” Seungri was about to say something as he started to put on his shoes when Chaerin decided to cut him off again.

“I know…”

“Not about the ice cream!” Seungri exasperatedly shouted which earned him the shrinking of Chaerin’s eyes, “I mean, you ought to know that you suck at changing topics.”

“Can’t help it, I’ve never been fond of a Drama King you,” Chaerin teased him whilst checking a directory right where the phone was.

“What? After all these years, you’re telling me that just now?”

“Heh, in those eleven years, I don’t want to put cracks in your heart.”

“I never knew you’re that considerate…” Seungri chuckled and then eyed her for some time, “You know what, put the phone down. Why don’t we enjoy the fine dining this five star hotel offers?”

Chaerin cocked her head to reflect on his statement, “That would suit… if you’re willing to use the recent bounty we,” Chaerin put on a stress on the latter word while eyeing him intently, “Received after capturing the Cutters’ leader.” Chaerin furrowed her brows and even shrugged as she continued to voice out her sentiments, “I don’t know… you seemed so laidback these days, well, you always are.”

“There’s going to be a ball this night,” Seungri informed her. He then raised a point where he knew would lead him into winning the argument with her. “Which means dinner is free of charge.”

Chaerin raised an eyebrow; she licked her lips while considering the matter Seungri had pointed out.

“Besides, it’s sad that we don’t get to socialize when we’re dressed so high-class like this,” Seungri flippantly commented as he tucked his hands in both side-pockets of his slacks. He even turned around, checking his reflection on the full-length mirror placed strategically beside the full glass-window of their unit, where it reflected the beautiful scenery that the full glass-window was displaying, showing an illusion of a vast outlook of the city night-lights inside their room. Seungri’s lips formed a satisfying smirk as he continued to admire the perfect fitting of the white tuxedo on his body.

“Show-off.”

“Well yes,” Seungri said, then he whipped his head to her, “For one, you’re ravishing in that dress.” His eyes scanned her from head to toe; Chaerin was wearing a dress that she snagged from the closet of their VVIP suite, a black strapless silk evening gown perfectly hugged all the curves of her body.

“You mean I look ravishing,” Chaerin snorted.

“Whichever,” Seungri flicked his hand, acting as if he could brush off his failure in aptly using a cool phrase. He then went to Chaerin’s side and offered his hand out to her. Chaerin reluctantly stood up; nonetheless, she hooked her hand to his arm. “You know I wouldn’t miss my chance to get more info about my Devil, right?”

“Why am I not surprised?” Chaerin mocked him. “You’re even false-praising me just so I’d join you in your tracking…” she even put on a façade of her irritation by sighing deeply. Tracking means they’ll have to go, blend, and talk with the people in the Great Hall downstairs and cunningly work their way into getting information about devils lurking around the area, per chancing that Seungri’s Devil may be one of them. This will surely be a long night for the two of them and Chaerin wasn’t so much displeased about the task at hand but to the fact that what they’re about to do has always turned out to be fruitless. Seungri’s hopeful eyes were the only ones that could break her stance though.

“Yes, but not really,” Seungri said. He started to walk on, leading Chaerin out of their unit. “I don’t have much time left,” he despondently looked at her after a while as they were near the door, “You,” it was Seungri’s turn then to change the topic as he suddenly smiled radiantly at her, acting flawlessly as if there wasn’t any huge problem to bother him, “You really look unearthly though, like an angel raised in hell.” Seungri caressed her cheek with his free hand.

“You always get emotional after a gunfight,” Chaerin then just smiled at him, when the guy finally looked away, her smile abruptly ended and it was replaced by a longing look. She then scanned the contours of his face at the same time as her irises turned into a bloody red hue.
