I talk to a girl in Bakersfield online intermittently, and we've both decided we need more friends and we were going to hang out someday...I get this IM from her last night while I was sleeping

Well, meet the chick, see if there's a friendship there, and if not then go for the guy because you don't have to worry about stepping in so much. If you and this girl do become friends, well, you could potentially step in anyway and see if anything happens with you and this guy. Not your fault if he thinks you're one hot mama and wants to date you. If he knows that this girl (who's his best friend) likes him and they are only friends, well, there's obviously nothing there.
