Any ideas?

I'm fresh out. I have one class that's INSANE. I can't even get through one line of a lesson without having to interrupt myself to tell someone to be quiet. They've been like this all year, and now they're upset about their grades...guess what kiddies? If you don't listen, you can't possibly comprehend...if you don't comprehend? You don't do ( Read more... )

That's Bakersfield High School Kids for you. They have nothing but oil fields and BC took look forward to. Take care of the ones who want to learn and let the others fail. It's just an early life lesson.

Well, for the most part teachers didn't have to tell me to be quiet because I usually kept to myself. I wasn't talkative in class. But there were a lot of other talkative people in my classes. Something that worked was the teacher would say the kids name and then say, "Oh did you want to share something?" Or something along those lines. EX: "I'm sorry Leticia I didn't hear you. What was that?" I think you get the drift. If you embarass them enough then they'll shut up.

As I was a socialite in HS, I always would talk just a *little* to long before class started, and then right after.. so naturally in a military town, many of my teachers were exmilitary..nothing worse than hearing "MR. PHIPPS! PLEASE, STAND UP AND SHARE WITH US THIS WONDERFUL BIT OF INSIGHT. I'M CERTAIN IT PERTAINS TO TODAYS LESSON, HELL - YOU WANNA COME TEACH THE CLASS, BOY?! GET UP HERE AND DO IT THEN!"

It'd keep me quiet for weeks! :)

or from my female teachers who didn't like to scream. . .

"Now Keith, you understand by talking during my class you've become a distraction. Do you know what we do with distractions? Of course you do - you will leave my class and go to the guidance office for some lessons on respect, manors, and how to pay attention"

I went to the office one time, she wasn't joking - she was all about order and respect. Made the fun days better - she'd make cookies and bring in fruit punch and we'd watch some science flick.. to this day hyenas scare me :nods:

I think Hon Sou had a great idea. You are not ineffective; but you must teach the ones who want to learn; therefore, detention or something along those lines should be doled out to the "talkers" after you ask them to share their thoughts with the class. Embarrassment!!!!! That should get them everytime. If it doesn't there is always the principal's office, God, how that scared the s.... out of me! I would suggest notes to parents, but it seems parents don't help a lot these days; of course if only one or two took heed it would help.

Hmm..I've kept the whole class after school (it's my last class of the day), and I've kept the noisy ones after class, I've made them clean my classroom. I think today I'm going to make each talking student stand up for the rest of class. And if that doesn't work? NOSES IN THE CORNER! Maybe I'll make them come sit on the floor in the front of the room!

Oooo ooo I know! It's along the same idea as you just mentioned. The ones that talk during class, have them come up to the front and have them teach. Especially if you assign readings that they are supposed to do on their own. Just say, "*persons name* why don't you come up and teach us about...* fill in the blank (and the person's name of course). That'll do it. The very few times I've talked in class and got caught by the teacher, they'd ask me to tell the class about whatever it was we were learning. I was so embarrassed!

If they wanna fail the class let them. A teacher can only do so much...a student has to want to learn. BTW, what class is this? Maybe have the kids who are talking assign them sections of the book (assuming there is a book) to teach the class in the next two days. -ejl
