Advice?

I was just asked by a professor here to do some freelance editing of three articles presented at a symposium and an addendum. The whole thing will be published with images in one volume. I'm not sure how much to charge per hour. Does anyone have any experience with this? I've done a lot of editing in my 5 yrs at this job, at least 10 catalogues ( Read more... )

20-35 bucks an hour

ask for a cap number on the amount of hours you are permitted to complete so he/she isn't shocked when you give the total.

I would charge $35/ hr & up, but them's NYC editing prices.

profs always bitch about money, i would be more conservative with the rate...

naomi, i raked in quite a bit when i charged a prof 20 bucks an hour... it adds up. and your editing experience is great, but working one-on-one with a professor can be different... might want to get your feet wet before charging 35. or you could simply give a range....

verbavolant, i remember you giving me good advice about my gig- you said don't go under 20 bucks an hour, and i have some writing experience as well. naomi's writing/editing experience may be more formal, however.

I wrote him back asking when the deadline was and how many hours he envisioned I'd be working on this. Then I said that I wasn't sure what his funding was for this project, but that the going hourly rate is about $25-35. We'll see....
