Aww, lovely. I don't know any of the background of these characters, really, but I knew immediately just how Max feels about Bastian from that little exchange. Now I want to know more about the backpacking trip!

Both the background of these characters and the backpacking trip are complicated beyond all belief. Probably more details about the backpacking trip will come out soon.

I'm just glad that Max came through as transparent on the subject as he always is in my head. :)

Bastian (who I don't think I've met before) seems beautifully foreign and mysterious and ... rich, in my head ... just on his own, regardless of the setting. :-D I love the narrative structure here - it floats around in a mirror of Max's thoughts without being too hard to follow. Nicely done.

I haven't introduced him before? I should. He truly is a character and a half. He's not as foreign as he acts, he is a bit mysterious even at the best of times, and... yeah. :)
