I'm very sorry to read about your loss. *hugs tightly* and I feel sort of bad for not being able to offer more help than just sending a few words - and I am not even good with those.
after watching the empty shell of my grandfather for months until he died I can understand the relieve of a loved one being freed of suffering. I wish I could remember what the last words were that we exchanged - even though his mind had been already a mess before the final stroke sent him on whole years way until his final breath...
therefore I am glad that you have so many wonderful memories, even pictures - keep them as long as you can. because in this way your friend will never be really gone.
