I think the euro has replaced nationalism in Europe. or good sense, or something.
funny story: my teacher in Italy lived in the US for a little bit, & was all pro-American etc etc etc, & he would always tell us stories about living in Chicago & how the US is the best country ever & so on. once he was talking about Sept 11, & he said (in his awesome broken English) that immediately after those attacks, people all over the little town we were in started hanging "pace" flags (like the one I had in my room) off their balconies, but he hung an American flag. crazy, si? he said he was showing support for the US. what he thought everyone else was doing with their goddamn peace & love crap, I don't know.
Also: is there something different in italian culture that makes them think of rainbows as more peaceful than the traditional white? or is it just a byproduct of the association with tolerance of different views expressed in multiculturalism and gay pride and all that rainbow-colored stuff? or is your flag not representative of everyone's? Or am I being silly?
yeah, the flag I have is the same as the rest of them, except for mine is shoddier because I bought it from a street vendor. as for the rainbows, I don't know. I assume it has to do with diversity & acceptance & whatnot .. using the rainbow for a flag as popular as the pace one seems like a nice gesture, not only for peace but also for other movements (multiculturalism & gay pride, like you said, for example). & using it on that large a scale (that flag is all over the freakin place) in a country like Italy, which isn't terribly progressive, also seems like it would do more good than a plain one. or else, yknow, rainbow colours are more eye-catchy than white. .. pretty much, I don't know, & I'm pulling this out of my ass.
