I actually like the softness of yours better than Man Rays. The original just seems too harsh for the subject I feel.

I agree in regards to the softness of the image. I am sure there was some type of message he was trying to convey with keeping the photograph harsh.

I would guess he used the fake tears to convey the lack of emotion from his subject. The harshness, I'm guessing, was to show that although she was a woman she was very cold and lacked the tenderness that people associate with woman.
