When my friend and I were traveling back to Laredo from San Antonio after attending a concert we stopped at one of the rest stops along the highway. It was quite a shock seeing the Milky Way so clearly. I'm sad I never got a chance to go out there when comet Hale-Bopp passed by (I could see it from within the city, but it just looked like a fuzzy blob).
