If there's any truth to it at all (and I personally have issues with accepting anonymous information, even if there's good reason for the anonymity), then all this Abu Gharib shit goes a helluva lot further up the chain of command than a couple dumbass reservists.

I've been reading the other Hersh articles about Abu Ghraib in the New Yorker, and they've all been pretty good. Say what you want about his sources - it's tough to argue with the guy who exposed My Lai.

and watergate (all the president's men is a fairly accurate account of that)...and played a major part in bringing CIA and NSC assassionation plots against other leaders during the Church Committee investigations.

if there were one journalist who i'd trust with anonymous sources, Hersh would be it...

...but that's only if credibility is what follows later on down the line. for now, it's an interesting and of true, sadly unsurprising read.
