I realize it's been around for a while now, but my new favorite piece of software is DOSBox. It's probably the best DOS emulator to date, and supports a helluva lot of old games ( Read more... )

I'd say that DOSEMU is probably the best DOS emulator to date. It's much faster than DOSBOX (e.g. Tomb Raider is pretty flawless on DOSEMU, but impossible in DOSBox) and it supports just about everything. DOSBox has better sound support though, with its FM emulation.

Uhm. Yeah. But unless I'm grossly mistaken, DOSEMU is strictly a Linux program.

Oh. Yeah, it is. I thought you meant DOS emulators in general. It's no coincidence that the closer you get to the OS, the faster the emulator is. Microsoft's NTVDM is actually really good (hmm, wonder why?), except that it doesn't emulate enough hardware to be useful for games. I don't see them fixing that any time soon...

This integrates with Windows' existing command prompt. It emulates Soundblaster, along with a few other things. Yet, the rest are handled by Windows so it runs more efficiently then a full DOS emulator. You'll probably have more luck with it... http://ntvdm.cjb.net/

Uhm. First of all, I have VDMSound. Secondly, I'm not having any problems with sound, as yet; it's speed that's the issue.

Thanks for trying, though.
