Health insurance is like heroin addiction, we need it but we don't want to need it.quietgrrlSeptember 26 2009, 02:20:37 UTC
Thanks for posting this. I do have insurance and am very happy that I do (my prescription bill without insurance is about $1500/mo, with insurance, it's $50/mo), but I'm not happy with it. Luckily this will end soon as the most expensive drug I'm taking is to actually cure something. I'm in this weird situation where I think all the toxic chemicals I'm exposed to at work (melting plastic, formaldehyde, carbon black, toner dust, etc) are actually causing my health problems but I can't actually prove it. If I quit my job and am wrong, and it's just a coincidence that my asthma got bad and I developed a bunch of food allergies and I now have severe cystic acne all at the same time that I started this job... then I'm left without health insurance and a mountain of pre-existing conditions. I don't think you can find a person that doesn't at least know someone who is in dire need of their meager health care or is relying on emergency care that puts them into collections.

the patient i wrote about: well, i talked to her doctor about all of this and she said that only some things are considered "pre-existing" and it depends on the insurance company.
i just think we shouldn't have to deal with insurance companies PERIOD. they are all evil. i know if we eliminated them that thousands would be left jobless - and that sucks too.
Even if you have a job with insurance, it's pretty terrifying to think about quitting or getting another job and having to go without insurance for a while and then deal with the pre-existing condition thing. There should be no such thing as a pre-existing condition.
