Most people go through antisocial slumps as we age; we're just less-likely to develop new social contacts & relationships unless circumstances force the issue (New job, dating, etc.)
I've been here for about 30 days in Japan, and I wouldn't say I have any "friends" yet, but I know my co-workers pretty well. You can either take initiative to meet new people or wait for life to catch up with you.
Though a field experiment in the remembrance of speech might stymie you. Or provoke conversation depending on who's around. Give it a shot!
