My mom moved to Redondo Beach last year and it's awesome. It's a bit expensive but Torrance is right by it and is more affordable and seems to be fairly nice to me. Plus it's close to the beach. I'm looking to move there this summer :)

good luck on the teaching jobs CA is broke and san diego at least is in a hiring freeze for teachers etc.

if you are moving into the L.A. area, Silverlake is pretty awesome. I live Sherman Oaks, it's really safe, but can be more expensive, but right now prices have dropped everywhere. There are some really great places that are safe all over! Good Luck! I would check out, Culver City, Silverlake, Sherman Oaks, and West Hollywood!
