Can someone please tell me why there is such an intense dislike for Ayn Rand amongst my peers and friends ( Read more... )

AFAIK:

Ayn Rand is held up as a champion by those who promote libertarianism - the idea that all taxes are theft and that Government should do nothing to redistribute wealth in any way or hinder the "free voluntary exchange" of capitalism. [To those of us who lean leftwards, this smacks of intellectual dishonesty; the idea that the vast bulk of people in the economic system are going to work "freely and voluntarily" is absurd.]

You'll have seen the Libertarians at work on OKC: they put their constant bleatings about taxes onto any political discussion, and put themselves into "Troll" category quickly with their shouting and boring people to death [actually an old Trotskyist tactic but one they've taken up with glee].

It may be a disservice to the woman that when, say, an OKC person puts "Ayn Rand" as an interest in their profile, it's pretty much taken for granted that they're a rabid right-winger who can't see past the contents of their wallet, but it seems to always work out that way.

AFAIK: As Far As I Know.

Sorry, it's my fault for overuse of acronyms. A common fault amongst those of us who have to do far too much damn paperwork :)

Most of the essays I found when I googled for "why do they hate ayn rand" boiled down to "They hate her because she is SO VERY RIGHT. Her extreme RIGHTNESS infuriates them."
Personally, I disagree with her philosophy because I don't think she understands how people work or how the world works.
And I HATE her because her prose is painfully bad and drier than Bond's martini.

Oh yeah, baby. I tried to read another one of her books outside of the two I HAD to read, and I found them less than fascinating. In looking back at reading "The Fountainhead" I must have been a glutton for punishment, but not as bad as my friend who read it AND "Atlas Shrugged" FOR FUN. I told him that I just can't get into her. Something about her, her work says "Big fat coward/I am going to pull an L.Ron Hubbard on the general public"

I just did not see all the fuss other people were making about her.

When I read those books I also was dating a republican capitalist who was very good to me emotionally, but could not fill my needs sexually. Pretty frustrating. Now he is white, soft (doughy), and has a receding hairline, is president of a bank in Temecula, has a big house in Pt Loma, and a trophy wife of sorts. He never introduced me to his parents because he thought I was too "Leftist" for them. That is when and why we broke up. I just could not be a trophy wife and I did not want to have kids. Especially his kids.
