I read an article a few years ago, where a lady took those plastic bags, cut them into strips, looped them together to make one long 'double-plied' strand, and crocheted her own grocery bags out of them. I've tried that, and it works nicely. The bags go into the washer if they get ickiness on them (milk, broken egg, meat juice, etc), and dry fairly quickly. I used a pattern for a large beach tote bag, and a large hook to make it, and it came out great. I've been trying to do the same again, to have several on hand. :P Just one more small way to combat the problem. Not as good as getting rid of plastic altogether, but it's hard finding a store around here that actually carries the paper bags anymore. :P (I'm one of those that does save the bags and occasionally takes the huge wads of them to the recycling bins at the store)
