How long before we become a communist nation . . . ?

I wonder how long now we've (the US) been owned by China  . . . .   well at least now I understand why Hilary Clinton said what she said . . .   that Human Rights were not on the table with China . . . .

Buying banking securities is not the same as being owned by China or anybody else. This lj space is not big enough for me to explain the economic differences between buying a bond and owning a country. Also, buying stock is not the same as buying the product.

However, the US owns more foreign securities than the rest of the world likes so turn about is fair play. Also the number one foreign nation for real estate and business ownership in the US is the UK. Not China, not Japan.

No country is an isolated economy in this day and age. The 1950's are ancient history.

The comment was made partially in jest . . . but you get my point! Actually, Japan "owns" more of us then China.

My point was about (what I consider to be) Hilary's very irresponsible remark about Human Rights not being on the table as regards China.

Feeling better?

the big scare novel on that one was "Rising Sun" written by Michael Crichton. one of his poorer attempts.all about how Japan was buying up the usa and we are all dooooooomed.

the thing that worries me a lot more about China is the fact that no one seems willing to crack down on them poisoning people, making actually toxic goods, etc etc..... because it might (gasp) raise prices.

partly because they poison their own folks too. so its not bias.

its why i wont put anything in contact with my food that was made in China.
its why i buy made anywhere but china when i can

its why when i pick up a new product (like the worm factory) i only do so if its made not in china

While Roksanne is right that there's a difference between owning bonds and owning the country, it's troubling that we're so indebted to foreign powers, because one thing the Bible got right is that the borrower becomes slave to the lender. If we need China or Japan or the UK to purchase our debt in order to perpetuate our government, that gives them power over us, and we have to take that into account when formulating policy on things like human rights, etc. Personally, I think that's bad.

The Washington Post covered this today as well.
