[ brief canon history ]
The Nation of Iceland came into being at 874 AD when one of Norway's people decided to settle down and live there. Then he was followed by many more Norse chieftains, their families and slaves who settled all the inhabitable areas of the island in the next decades. In 930 AD, the Commonwealth era was started, and his bosses at the time (the ruling chiefs) estabilished an assembly called the Althing. He enjoyed a mostly uninterrupted period of growth in this period, which ended at 1262 AD. In a not-so-distant future, his people was converted into Christianity. Then a Civil War breaks out, which resulted in the signing of the Old Covenant, establishing a union with the Norwegian monarchy, making Iceland a vassal state of Norway, and a little ice age occured. He remained under Norwegian kingship until 1380, when he became part of the Kalmar Union, along with Norway, Sweden, and Denmark, with Denmark as the dominant power. Unlike Norway, Denmark did not need Iceland's fish and homespun wool. This created a dramatic deficit in Iceland's trade, and as a result, no new ships for continental trading were built. The Danish trade monopoly would remain in effect until 1854.`
When Denmark and Norway were separated by the Treaty of Kiel in 1814 following the Napoleonic Wars, Denmark kept him as a dependency. The independence movement was started shortly after, and Denmark grant him home rule, which was expanded in 1904. Along came World War Two, he was actually declared himself as neutral but, unfortunately for him England decided to invade him in Operation Fork. Blame it on paranoia. World War Two was almost done when, following a referendum, he formally became an independent republic on June 17, 1944 (his birthday in canon).
Iceland became a charter member of NATO on 1949. And in October 2008, his banking system collapsed, prompting Iceland to seek large loans from the IMF and friendly countries.
[ AU history ]
If there is one thing he wanted the most, it's a happy family. Born in a wealthy pureblooded family, his mother was British and his father was Norwegian. They met each other when his father visited Liverpool on a business trip, so to speak, and shortly after they fell in love. The usual thing happened, they got married and his older brother was born. A few years after his brother's arrival in the world, Sveinn was born. Not like his brother though, he was rather...unwanted and unexpected, a product of accident because accidents happened all the time. They sent him to Reykjavik, Iceland to live with his relatives (uncle and aunt, to be exact, and several cousins) ---from his father, of course. He spent most of his childhood there, blissfully unaware of the existence of his parents or his brother. His childhood was rather...happy and quite normal, though he doesn't have many friends because he's shy. There's still the occasional bullying, though, from other kids and his-Danish-cousin-who-proclaimed-himself-as-his-older-brother. He went to a private school full of other wizardlings, so yes, he was also blissfully unaware of the existence of Muggle things like computers and such. At his eleventh birthday, his parents has finally decided that yes, now they had time for their youngest son, and thus, he moved to London.
Growing up, his father was a distant figure, always working (both of his parents worked in the Ministry of Magic), while his mother was a strict yet cold person, controlled almost every aspect of his life, including the way he dress and talk. More often than not they ignored him, using work as a reason. But his brother never ignored him; he was the only person who truly listened to him and went through almost the same things, and Sveinn adored him very much. His parents thought that he was a Squib for awhile, but then, when he was thirteen, his magical talent finally showed itself. One cloudy Fall evening, he accidentally transformed a matchstick into a needle.
The existence of magic in him successfully attracted his parents' attention. They no longer see him as a distraction. Power is important in his family; his mother was an Animagi, her animal form was that of a snow leopard, while his father came from an old, respectable family in Norway and both are powerful wizards. He should be attending Hogwarts if his parents did not divorced shortly after, mostly due to his father's family economical problem. The circumstance though, forced him and his brother to leave with their father to Oslo, and he lived there for about three years. There, he once again enrolled in a private school with his brother being his tutor for magic ---his brother was quite a genius at magic. His life was rather Muggle-free. One day, a letter from his mother arrived, inviting him to live with her for a year or two back in Liverpool for a change of situation; as a breath of fresh air. He was about to turn down her invitation at first, because he disliked her and the way she controlled his life (his father wasn't as stern as her), but then again, he can always use a "holiday" now and then. In Oslo, things weren't any better. They wasn't as rich as before, his father once again (and always) was a workaholic, and his brother, being a grown-up now, already has his own life and was pretty detached from Sveinn. In the end, he accepted his mother's invitation and moved back to London. The letter of Hogwarts arrived about a week after that. The holiday has turned out to be a not-holiday.
[ personality ]
The first impression people would get upon meeting Sveinn is "an awkward, apathetic teenager". He tried his best to mimic his brother's cool, firm demeanor, but sometimes, he failed, and his true persona shines through. Sveinn has a rather nasty temper on the inside, it only take certain things and of course, certain people, like [ Denmark ], to tick him. More often than not, people didn't take his anger seriously, causing him to get all-frustrated, deadpanned, and said something anti-climax like "whatever" or "I don't understand". Most of the time, though, his anger was only bubbling under the surface, resulting in passive-aggressiveness. Like his brother Bjorn, he's sarcastic to a certain degree, but unfortunately, the sarcasm may sound less menacing from his mouth than his brother's.
Again, like his brother, he's not good with emotions, and he avoid, with all his might, expressing them, even to the extent of being extreme. But he's not-so-stoic, and sometimes, certain situations may cause him to show an emotion, most often being embarrassment and/or frustration. The latter comes easily to him. He's awfully shy, and to him, dealing with other people, especially making physical contact with them, was painfully awkward. That does not automatically makes him an antisocial, because he is perfectly capable of forming social relations with other people, only it's very hard for him to open up to people, making him seems mysterious and withdrawn to most people. Once he trusted someone, though, he'll trust he/she with his life, and would cling to them to the point of being needy. He's independent and is able to deal with things by himself, but he's got a pretty nasty dependant streak going on.
Sveinn was pretty much indifferent to most people, but then again, if you're on his "friend list", your well-being will be his business and he'll show his affection in a subtle and/or strange way. He'll treat everyone equally (their blood status doesn't bother him), and for the purpose of this RP, he'll spoke in a (sometimes overly) polite manner. Once he got close to you, though, he'll speak to you casually, in that typical teenage manner. Maybe not so much, since English isn't his first language, and that automatically made him to have little knowledge in this little thing called "slang language".It may not show, but he's a determined, passionate person on the inside. Determined, unfortunately, also means stubborn, which means if he sets his mind on something, he won't quit, to the point of being stupid. Blind determination is scary, indeed. Being youngest in his family, he considered himself as a mature "adult", but in reality, he's not that mature. If things aren't going the way he wanted it to be, he'll pout and sulk until he gets his way, sometimes even for days, and to an extent where he refused to talk to other people.
Another result for being the youngest in family was his quiet demeanor. Often, people automatically assumed that he's not a man of many words, like Bjorn, but it's actually because his family ignored him. He sulked all this time because of that and again, being the unfortunate person he is, people presumed that it's because he's untalkative. Another side of him was that of historian; he treasured and remembered the past, but he realized that it's not good to be stuck in the past. Memories was something he hold dear. Sveinn also has the makings of a scholar; he's intelligent, a fast learner, an avid reader, and curious to the point where he conquered his fear just to satisfy his curiosity. It's also possible that he had a soft spot for animals, especially birds, since he had a pet puffin in canon and his national symbol is a falcon.
In a nutshell, Sveinn was cold on the outside, hot on the inside.
[ eleven true facts ]
01 As a result of being controlled by his mother, his speech is polite, sometimes even overly-polite, and slang words? What slang words? (he know some of them, but not as much as other kids in his age). But sometimes, when his apathy shines through, or when he feel a tad bit rebellious, he'll speak casually. This doesn't mean he doesn't know how to swear, though. He'd secretly taught himself how to swear, and sometimes, if you listened well enough, you can hear him swear under his breath. Mostly in Norwegian, though. And when he is really angry, he usually went somewhere secluded where he can erupt in a volcanic fashion...which involves swearing a lot, of course.
02 Music. He can't live without it. Though, he pretends that the kind of music he loves is classical, not death metal and other "hardcore" stuffs. The kind of music "which required a special skill to enjoy". Blame it on Brother Dearest. It's all because of him. None of his parents know, though, because if they know, especially his mother, they will surely kill him.
03 His mother insists that he should learn how to play the piano, because it's "classy". He rebelled though (it happens once in a blue moon), and said that he wanted to learn how to play the guitar instead. It's much cooler anyways. A co(l)d war breaks after that, and he won thanks to his stubborness. But since the stubbornism runs in the family, his mother still forced piano lessons on him, though she granted his wish.
04 He could care less about status. Well, one of the things that he would admit shamelessly is that he was glad being born into a family with lots of money, since...you know. Money bought everything. When his father went bankrupt he was rather frustrated and angrrry. He'll get over it, though, since his mother was still wealthy. If there is one thing he loves about his mother, it's her consistency in sending him (and his brother) money every month when he lives in Oslo. She maybe a bitch, but hey, she gives him money. We live in a material world. But sometimes, he wished that he was just like those normal Muggle boys, though~
05 He can speak and write Icelandic better than Norwegian because he lived there longer. And his English is better than his Norwegian. He cursed better in Norwegian, though.
06 Being a control freak, his mother tried to set him up with a French girl in Beauxbatons who came from an ultra-rich pureblood family. He disliked the girl, though. She's gorgeous, but annoying. Constantly nagging him about marriage (after school!), and always talked about partiespartiesandmoarparties. She also loves to drag him around and showed him to her snobby friends. Not fun at all. And she's a pervert. He's too embarassed to tell anyone about his future-fiancee. In fact, he'd rather die than have to tell other people about it.
07 If God exists, He must be his brother. If not, then God does not exist. As simple as ABC. Sveinn must remember that his brother =/= God.
08 Revenge is a dish best served cold. If you pissed him off, then after two weeks or so, expect your homeworks/projects to be violently sabotaged. If you're not his classmate, then be careful if you met him on the corridors or Great Hall. And if you were his Housemate? Congratulations, you won the jackpot. Being almost-stoic doesn't mean that he couldn't perform revenge.
09 He secretly was interested in Muggles and everything that has a relation with them. That's the reason why he took the Muggle Studies class. His mother would be angry if she know, though, because like most racist pureblood, she thinks that Muggles are eww. If his father treats them (the Muggles) coldly, she, on the contrary, despises them openly and treats any of this unfortunate souls who encountered her on a daily basis with rudeness and sarcasm. Speaking about sarcasm, it runs in the family.
10 He aced most of his classes, but not Muggle Studies. He liked it (see #09) and genuinely interested in it, but due to his upbringing he doesn't know much about Muggles. His parents never allowed him to touch or own any Muggle things, and again, his life was pretty much Muggle-free. He sucked at this one. Potions kind of confused him, too, since he was the type of person who: "Hey, this one looks like it'll made my Potion work. Let's try this!" which often leads to epic failure or strange effects. Secretly a mad, mad scientist. Be very afraid.
11 His patronus shaped like a
peregrine falcon. Not a puffin, unfortunately, although he liked puffins very much. He has a fetish with them.
