Very random “essay” here about Kohaku and about names. As a warning the parts about Shuichirou are written as if someone had read all of Wish already so yes, there will be tons of spoilers all the way to the art book chapter o/
Ok, I also realize I’ve been a bit random with how to spell people’s name from my canon. So just a list, more to remind myself, what I’ll be using. If I have spelled name’s differently before just ignore it. Also if you have any suggestions on better spellings to use poke me!
Kouryuu, Kudou Shuichirou, Kokuyou, Hisui, Touki, Ryuuki, Ransho, Ruri, Hari, Shinichirou.
Since Clamp no Kiseki just gives me the Japanese spelling of the first four, those are the only ones I know are correct. So please poke me about the other ones!
Also, I’m sort of wobbly about using suffixes since I fret about it too much and the Tokyopop translation doesn’t include these making it hard for me to judge who would get what suffixes. Because of this I’m just skipping them entirely, I hope this won’t distract from Kohaku’s politeness but I prefer to not mess it up. That and despite the Japanese names, I refuse to believe everyone speaks Japanese in heaven and hell. I’ll probably use -san and -kun OOCly to differ between the two Shuichirou’s though.
And while on that subject, I’ll be calling all archangels for “Master Insert Name Here”, this will apply to anyone in camp with a similar status. In this case I realize it would have been easier to use -sama to be gender-neutral but… both Touki and Ryuuki are referred to as “she” and still called master and I find madam to be far more gender specific, hence I’ll use master for Hisui too.
I’ll make a real gender essay later, since I’ll want to use picture comparison and I’m too lazy to go and make those, but I’ll just note I’ll keep avoiding mentioning gender for the angels forever. It’s just a pet peeve of mine to assign gender to them. Also in short; Kohaku doesn’t care about gender and doesn’t identify as anything besides being an angel. And as far as gender identity comes this is an identity in itself. Also please forgive me my probably nonsense gender-neutral pronouns.
Also let’s discuss the time skip. I decided to take Kohaku pretty much immediately from after the 100 year time skip at the end of the manga. This is largely because part of, ok most of, the reason I apped Kohaku is because sie can be so very naïve and not understanding the way humans work sometimes. After the time skip Kohaku grows up a lot, especially after spending over a year with Shuichiro-kun. Sie is learning to cook and being more responsible and seems to be much more secure in hir relationship with Shuichirou than before. That and Kohaku managed to magically grow a set of hormones after the time skip.
Also while it’s obvious that Kohaku is more at ease when it comes to Shuichirou-kun this doesn’t really say much seeing how badly Kohaku took to being separated from Shuichirou-san. So I’m not sure how Kohaku would react being forcibly taken from Shuichirou again. That being said if by some miracle someone apps Shuichirou-kun I’d probably canon update to the art book chapter.
So, why not take Kohaku from during the time skip? Simply because while Kohaku will worry, Kohaku still won’t have a choice but to wait for Shuichirou since he’s dead. Kohaku of course hasn’t realised yet that just because they have the same soul they won’t be the same person, so it’ll really be Shuichirou-san that sie’d wait for.
Also during volume four Kohaku took the most hits with the whole Shuichirou-san being dead and being forced to be a chibi for a hundred years. But when God’s plan with the whole chibi thing was revealed Kohaku does seem pretty accepting, since sie realizes that there pretty much isn’t anything else that can be done. Of Course Kohaku would be much rather sleeping and waiting than being in camp and waiting but Kohaku also realizes that there really isn’t much to be done since there is no Shuichirou out there. This hurts too of course, and Kohaku will sad face about it. But it’s still better than knowing Shuichirou is right there and Kohaku can’t be with him, or thinking that sie could never see him again.
This is also why I didn’t take Kohaku from before Shuichirou-sans death. Because while stuck in the past in volume 2 and being forced to stay in Heaven in vol. 3 Kohaku ends up going on constant sadfaces. Compared to a lot of other CLAMP works wish doesn’t have much in angst or emo but what there is Kohaku puts to use when separated from Shuichirou-san. And I just don’t want to deal with this constantly in camp, so yeah, time skip o/
Kohaku will never be completely content in camp unless a Shuichirou appears but as it is Kohaku will deal with it. And probably still be able to be mostly cute and earnest and want to help you. As of after the intro-post Kohaku is going to assume that Shuichirou-kun isn’t out there yet and the best thing to do is to make the time pass, which is easiest to do by helping out around camp. So touch on the Shuichirou subject and you get sad angel but otherwise there should be no problem! Well unless you count the fact that Kohaku cries when teased and probably out of sympathy etc. etc. but that still won’t trigger any trauma buttons like DEAD BOYFRIEND does, so it should still be fine.
And gosh this sounds a lot more depressing than it really is. I don’t think it will even come up in camp much and was mostly written because that seemingly random sadface Kohaku did at Kamui when finding out sie couldn’t leave camp.
Also on a completely random note; APP Kouryuu! He’s my favourite Wish characters and you know you want to come and pick on Kohaku and sparkle while doing so. More serious pimping post to be made in the future~
