Poll Yes, there's a reason.

I know, I know, according to my dictionary (OS X's built in, fwiw) "overlook" archaically means the same thing as "oversee", but it also means bewitch with the evil eye. I'm talking about something that's unnoticed.

personally my first thought was the kind of oversight that leads to planes exploding in midair. 'oh shit, I forgot to check that bit didn't I?'

N) Hmm. I'd probably go with what floofyscorp said, due to the better example than any I thought of: to elaborate on the slight difference, 'overlook' can be used for 'overlooked the transgression', whereas 'oversight' refers to a more specific type of overlooking.
