GMail and Calendar

I discovered Google Calendar in the vague and distant past (i.e, more than a year ago). At that time, I seem to recall that GMail would, in the top right corner of the mail view, show you events that it thought might have been mentioned in the email. It was always wrong, but -- where did the technology go? Why hasn't it been worked on? It would be
