The appearence of a previously unmentioned child from a old relationship does seem to raise questions.

Here's what I don't get.... if he's usually a baby, why isn't he usually with you?

Because I had actually very little to do with his conception and birth, and it was decided that with a very turbulent lifestyle it would be better for him there.
