Why is IP tracking on?

Sorry, we'll add an explanation. We've turned it on until some of the wank has died down, since most of it has been anon--we're hoping that having IP tracking on will help curb it. We've also got it turned on to track spam, as there's been an upswing in spam on the comm lately too.

We have only had one so far. Perhaps if we get more, we could create a posting that highlights which one they are, so people could find them.

I understand where you are coming from, but doesn't the IP tracking kind of defeat the purpose of an anonymous meme?

Only the mods see the IP. I am hoping once the spamming/wanking subsides we can take it off. I put a two month period, more as a precaution. If we do not get anymore spamming activities it will be taken off before then.

To be honest with you, that doesn't make me feel any better.
Sometimes I post prompts that I would be embarrassed and uncomfortable to be identified with by anyone, even a mod.

Of course, here you can say that if I feel that way I should stop posting them until this two month period passes, but on the other hand, isn't the whole point of a kinkmeme to give the opportunity to everyone to express their kinks without feeling embarrassed because someone knows who they are?

My unwarranted, but well-meaning advice, as a fellow kinkmeme mod of a (if formerly) very active community, is to employ your freeze button. Believe me, I understand perfectly well the pressure to deal with spam and wank, but this isn't the answer.

As a prompter, I completely understand--I've made prompts I'm not fond of the idea of people tracing back to me, too.

Believe me, we will be employing the freeze button as quickly as we can on any issues that arise, but at the same time, we want to make sure that if a user is a repeat offender, we can take the appropriate activity against them (and as we can't block anonymous users, that action would be to tie their anon comments to their account, which I understand is what you're worried about).

To be honest, as a mod, I don't even notice the IP unless I'm actively looking for it, and I'm not actively looking for it unless there's a reason to (meaning, if there's someone breaking the rules). I don't surf the meme logged in on the mod account--I do it from my personal, and the only account that can see IP addresses is this one, the mod account.

As my fellow mod said above, if we feel we can turn it off sooner than the two months, we definitely will. Hopefully, we'll be able to.

um. computer failure. how exactly does ip tracking work and what does it do?

IP tracking basically means that we, on the mod account only, can see the IP addresses of anyone who posts on the meme, anon or not. Your IP address is a sequence of numbers unique to your internet connection (but not to your account or your computer--if, for instance, you log in from your house on your laptop and then log in on the same laptop from, say, a Starbucks, you'd have a different IP address from each location). What this means is that when someone posts on anon who has an account, if they've posted off anon anywhere on the meme, we can tie their anon comments to their account, and if they're breaking the rules while on anon, we can suspend/ban their account, if needed

Thanks for the info. Also, I was wondering and if I'm asking this in the wrong area I apologize, is there new security where when ever someone comments or posts to this community it asks you to prove you are not a bot or that you are human??? It keeps happening to me when I comment to a post. It never used to do this. Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal to get captcha when you post anon or when it's a post where a lot of other people are anon or when a post hits 5000 comments. It's to prevent spam.

Thanks for replying. I'm not posting anon but I guess it can get pretty crowded in here. It's just nice to know the reason since I hadn't had it happen to me before while in the community. Thanks again.
