nature vs nurture

okay, random thought...if someone had not heard a scary story involving rain...or seen a movie of the same genre...would the rain still create a heightened sense of...fear? I guess I'm asking, is fear during rainstorms nature or nurture? anyone?

hmmm. I would have to say no. But then again I haven't seen any scary movies involving rain. I'm a chicken and for that reason I try to avoid scary movies. And BECAUSE of that I still love the rain.

Which is an interesting thought because children don't like storms because of the loudness of the thunder and what not. Which makes you wonder what chances children from really disliking storms to loving them. . . *shrug*

My dog is terrified of storms. And we didn't teach him that.

But when I was little I was never afraid of storms. So I don't know. Maybe it has to do with intelligence factor.

Some fears are conditioned, and some are instinctual. I'm pretty sure the lump in your throat after a loud thunder clap is simply the result of a process left over from when we weren't at the top of the food chain in your brain where loud, unexpected noise = OMG release teh adrenaline!!

At the same time, you wouldn't get the Pavlovian reaction of expecting a hooded man with a hook for a hand whenever it rains if you have no reason to.

P.S. add me!
