Title: Rumor
Rating: G
Summary: Rin hears a rumor that troubles her, so she asks Sesshoumaru-sama about it...
A/N: Just a little something to celebrate my b-day. ^^

Rumor

The crackle and hiss of the fire are the only noises in the night. The uncertain flicker is the only thing that lights the otherwise gloomy, cloud shrouded darkness. It is uncharacteristic of Rin to linger long after Jaken has fallen asleep, enough so that Sesshoumaru expends part of his attention on observing her. Her large eyes are serious and thoughtful, dark against deeper darkness, as she looks at him.

“Do I shame you, Sesshoumaru-sama?” she asks, with a straightforwardness that belies her anxiety over his answer.

“Yes,” he replies without remorse or pity.

“Rin wishes she was a youkai!” she exclaims in frustrated anger.

“You are as you were meant to be,” he tells her passively, never once batting an eye at her outburst.

“But if Rin-” she starts, only to be cut off by his next words.

“Regardless of what you are,” he interjects in a tone that brooks no argument. “You shame me because you are a distraction in the midst of battle.”

“Rin is sorry,” she immediately chimes; then more slowly she adds. “Is that why Sesshoumaru-sama leaves Rin behind sometimes?”

“Yes.”

“Jaken too?”

“Yes.”

“Oh,” she responds, quiet for a moment as she digests his words. Then, true to her nature, she asks the question every child asks.

“Why?”

“Clarify your query, Rin,” he orders without any hint of irritation or impatience.

“Why is Rin a distraction?” she asks innocently.

“Because you’re loud and slow,” Jaken mumbles grumpily, eyeing them both blearily.

“Jaken-sama is too!” Rin retorts, her serious conversation with Sesshoumaru unraveling as she argues with the toad. She and Jaken make rude faces at each other before she returns to the subject at hand.

“Why is Rin a distraction?” she queries again.

“Because you are mortal,” he replies cryptically, watching her with amber dark eyes that give nothing away, “Because you are fragile.”

“Fragile?” Rin repeats; mystified.

“Sesshoumaru-sama would be troubled if you died,” Jaken interrupts grouchily, his yellow eyes eerily reflecting the firelight.

A striped wrist flicks once, and then Jaken is clutching his head in pain where the rock struck. Rin ignores the imp’s distress, staring at wonder at Sesshoumaru.

“Is that true, Sesshoumaru-sama?” she queries with a lilt of hope and optimism in her voice.

For a moment he looks down at her with a sharp, indescribable glance. He lifts his gaze up and away, allowing it to go distant without betraying any emotion whatsoever.

“I do not wish for your death,” he cedes after a pause.

“Is that why you leave me behind, so I’ll stay safe with Ahun?” she presses eagerly, wide awake with wonder.

No answer is forthcoming, yet her joy remains undiminished as she dares to amble over to his side and snuggle down next to his still form.

“Go to sleep,” he reminds her unnecessarily, his words a definite end to the conversation that his silence has starved of further input.

“Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama,” she chimes with a wide yawn. A wiggle, a scratch, and another yawn later, her eyes drift close as her false high wears off.

Enough time passes that Jaken has settled down into soft snoring before she reaches for his hand, wrapping her small fingers around one of his long clawed ones.

“Rin will stay safe so Sesshoumaru-sama doesn’t have to worry,” she assures him, cracking one eye open to look up into his startled face. Satisfied, she closes her eye and smiles as she sleeps, clutching tight to his hand.

In the gloomy darkness of the cloud strewn night, he does not withdraw his finger from her relaxed grasp.
