Personally, I detest guns. And, I read somewhere that when owning a gun, there's like a 70% chance it'll be used against you in your own home. So, I've never bought into that 'if I only had my own gun I'd be safe or I would have saved someone' theory
( ... )
The Supreme Court just ruled 5-4 to uphold the individual right to bear arms. And by 'just ruled' I mean about a week ago, striking down DC's law regulating individual gun ownership, so there's that then.
A woman in my town was shot to death last week at the YMCA where I used to bring MK for programs. The children were in the pool where MK swam just six months ago. The woman was watching her four year old when her husband came in and shot her to death in front of her 12 year old who was at her side (and of course everyone swimming).
The idea that anyone can get hold of a gun regardless of the law scares me shitless. The idea the the Supreme Court recently overruled the law regarding ownership of handguns in DC scares me shitless.
I wish I knew what the answer was...but I really don't believe it's more guns.
I'm 100% with you on the gun control issue. Actually, I followed your link first and started reading the comments and thought 'Geeeee, the Times is being invaded by the NRA' and then I read your post which said the same. So... yeah... By the way, this story is not the main headline story in France at the moment because of Ingrid Bethancourt's liberation, but otherwise it would be. 196 times just seems impossible to fathom.
That's just it - people in many countries, including plenty in Europe, don't think it's weird when all policemen carry guns. Here (and I suspect in Ireland too though I don't know for sure) there are police, and then armed police, the latter only getting called out when it's known that a suspect is armed or when it's particularly likely that they'll need them; or I think now in airport police too. But I've walked down the street in Germany for example and been amazed at the armed police everywhere, with big semi-automatics (in as far as I recognise gun types) and things not even handguns. But you'd have trouble explaining to people in Germany, and I imagine the states, how police even manage to maintain law and order without a gun, because they all do. And I imagine it's because those criteria under which an armed police unit would be needed in Britain are met all the time in America because many suspects are likely to be carrying a gun

I particularly love the idiots who go around saying that the only problem with guns is people who don't know what they're doing handling them and accidents occurring. Personally I feel that someone being stupid is more likely to hurt themselves or anyone daft enough to stand too close to them, and I'm far more scared of people who know what they are doing with a gun and the fairly deliberate things they can do.
