Avengers: Assemble!

...or whatever the team says when they suit up. "Avengers: Organize!" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

So, I saw the movie that every single person in the world has probably seen already, and I have Thoughts. They are not particularly interesting, articulate or intelligent Thoughts, but Thoughts they are, The Avengers twice this week (dating boys is haaaaard!) and what appeared at first glance to be a fun summer action movie with some funny bits and cute men in spandex and 'splosions turned out to be...well, pretty much exactly that, on second viewing. Not sure what I expected to find - one does not go to American superhero movies for existential truth, after all. (Unless you're watching one of Nolan's Batman movies). I was certainly prepared to be a little horrified by some of the political, social or sex/gender values on display, like I was when I saw Iron Man. Instead, Joss' script and directorial choices managed to make this one adolescent male power fantasy that didn't make me want to put my fist through a wall, Hulk-style.

Truthfully, The Avengers delivered as a fairly solid summer popcorn movie. I didn't luuuurve it and I'm not going to fangirl it (Marvel flicks, like the comics, have never grabbed me) but it's definitely not the worst choice you can make at the box office right now. It does solidify the fact that a Justice League movie is never going to happen, and it certainly wouldn't be as cohesive, well-paced and stimulating as this one. Plus, no Chris Evans and his cute bum!

(What? I didn't say these Thoughts weren't shallow).
