I think it stems from older warring days, when wars were often personal matters entirely. If the males of one side showed emotion, then they had a weakness that could downgrade their ability to fight. Weaknesses such as girlfriends/wives, sentimental objects, and so on would get held hostage.

The obvious solution, being stoic, has evidently been hardened into most human DNA by now, or maybe it's just been passed down too much. *shrug*

The weird thing is I adore men because when they show their emotions you can be certain it's genuine. With women... all I've had are bad experiences because they always overdo their emotions. From what I've seen they cry over the stupidest of things, they get angry quicker than men do, and so often they do it just for attention.

The truth is both genders are flawed. Men don't show enough emotions, women show too much. But that's only as a stereotype. Individually I have met women who don't show too much emotion, and men who show a good amount. And then you get the ones where the women are stoic and the men cry for attention.

...I still don't like women though, even if it is a biased view. XP

Haha... Have you ever read Self-Made Man by Norah Vincent?

It's an interesting exposition of what it's like to be a man in today's world told from the eyes of a woman.
I liked it a lot.
And she does bring up this theme, all the time, about how men's emotions are limited by standards of manliness, how tough it is to get things across to people when you're not allowed to show emotion or even say how you feel.

You know, all you've done is mature alot faster than most guys. You'll make a great husband one day.

Don't let any girl mistreat you though! There are some mean ones out there.

Just get through all the stupid people in high school and you'll be fine.

^__^ My two cents. Everything will be okay.

It's true that in general, men are expected to control their emotions much more than women. However, I think you may be looking at this the wrong way. I know guys, not many but enough, who are willing to show their emotions and aren't afraid of them, and they aren't ridiculed because they're comfortable with their own feelings. In general, I think if you're ok with yourself, others will be too. If you don't feel like you can cry at a sappy movie, it probably has more to do with the fact that YOU don't think it's ok, not that society thinks it's not ok.
