the essential reading is Noam Chomsky's Goals and Visions.

One necessarily wants to dismantle the state - that is the vision, but in the short term, one often wants to strengthen the state, because it is the only institution with any popular involvement - corporations being the order of the day, and corporations being merely private tyrannies. Governmental policies must be judged on a case by case basis, but it's clear that, for example, national health care is better than the alternative...
